In 1982, the fourth Finnish SOS Children's Village was opened at Vihanti, a small community in northern Finland.
Vihanti has about 4000 inhabitants, and it is located approximately 600 kilometres north of Helsinki and 75 kilometres south of the city of Oulu.
The SOS Children's Village of Vihanti is situated on the edge of the town Vihanti and is surrounded by beautiful pine woods.

 Vihanti Mine (Lampinsaari Mine)
The Vihanti mine is close to the geographical centre of Finland, in the municipality of Vihanti.
Besides Zn, the ore contained recovarable volumes of Cu, Pb, Ag and S. Three main generations of sulphide mineralisation have been identified at Vihanti: 1) The Hautakangas and Hautaräme pyrite bodies which both had Cu- and Zn-bearing parts.
The oldest type of economically potential mineralisation at Vihanti is a uranium-phosphorous horizon located near the stratigraphic base of the volcano-sedimentary formation.

Zinc became our second most important metal with the opening of the Vihanti mine in 1954.
In time, Vihanti was supplanted by the Pyhäsalmi mine, whose complex ore also yielded the pyrites which led us into sulfur production.

The main Zn province is in island arc setting within the Savo Belt in central Finland.
It includes two major deposits, the Pyhäsalmi mine which has been in production since 1962 and the now exhausted Vihanti mine (1951–1992).
The Uusimaa Belt in SW Finland, also in an arc setting, includes the now exhausted Orijärvi, Aijala and Metsämonttu mines.
