Vyborg (Cyrillic Выборг, Finnish Viipuri, German Wiburg) is a town with 70,000 inhabitants on the Karelian Isthmus, near the head of the Bay of Vyborg, 130 km to the north-west of Saint Petersburg, 38 km south from Russia's border with Finland, where the Saimensky Canal enters the Gulf of Finland.
During the Finnish Civil War Viipuri was in the hands of the Reds, until it was captured by the Whites on 29 April 1918.
On 29 August 1941, Viipuri was recaptured by Finnish troops, which proceeded to lay siege to the city of Saint Petersburg in the deadliest siege in history.

 Viipuri Library: 70th Anniversary in 2005 — Virtual Finland
The Municipal Aalto Library of the City of Vyborg (original name Viipuri Library) is one of the most important works of Alvar Aalto and together with the Paimio Sanatorium a cornerstone of his international fame and considered to be a masterpiece of the 20th century architectural heritage.
At the end of the 1980s, Finnish and international interest in the Viipuri Library arose and in 1991 the restoration project of the Viipuri Library was started when Elissa Aalto, Alvar Aalto's second wife and working partner, together with the Aalto Club, launched an international appeal for repair of the library.
The restoration of Viipuri Library is a critical process and an interesting pilot project for the restoration and conservation of modern architecture.

The Battle of Tali-Ihantala was a battle in World War II, part of the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union.
It lasted from June 25 to July 9, 1944 in the small area (100km²) between the Gulf of Viipuri and Vuoksi river, and ended with Soviet forces giving up, unsuccessfully, on their attempts to force their way through the Finnish defences.
The VT-line was breached in Sahakylä and Kuuterselkä on June 14 and after failed counterattack in Kuuterselkä by the Finnish armoured division the defence was pulled back to the VKT-line (Viipuri (Vyborg) - Kuparsaari - Taipale).

Viipuri (or Vyborg, the Russian name, which is perhaps internationally better known) had been from its beginnings not only a vivid trading center, but also an international and "cosmopolitan" city.
When the Second World War broke out, Viipuri was the second largest city in Finland (albeit only due to the annexation of suburbs, something that was done in Turku only after the war, and then it beat Viipuri hands down...), with the busiest export harbour and perhaps the liveliest commercial activity in the country.

A glance at the old crime statistics reveals that things were also pretty wild and woolly in old Viipuri (as they were across the entire Karelian Isthmus) when it was still a part of Finland before 1940.
