All Viiv systems will ship with a remote control, Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition operating system, and other software that will allow users to interact with their PC in similar fashion to using a television.

 bit-tech.net | Intel unveils VIIV
VIIV appears to be shorthand for a series of technologies that a media PC must have to deliver the best user experience at home.
Also in the VIIV specification is the ability to transcode media simply and quickly.
The alternative view, which we're wondering about right now, is that it looks a little bit like VIIV is a great way for Intel to begin to drop the Pentium 4 quietly and shift to Pentium M for desktop PCs.

InformationWeek | Viiv | Commentary: What Is Viiv, Really? | January 6, 2006   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The Viiv specification is likely to refer to some additional hardware and software modules covering areas of digital rights management and protection but the value and necessity of these depends entirely on how much “buzz” Intel can create around Viiv by dint of getting other companies to advertize the brand.
A key aspect of the Viiv specification must surely be the various lock-ins and lock-outs — patents applied for or granted — that serve to differentiate a Viiv computer from a "normal" computer or a digital entertainment computer from another supplier.
The Viiv specification is also likely to contain the instructions to the PC-building slave companies on how to pay Intel for the appropriate patent licenses and components and on how they should not consider undermining the Viiv specification by building to any other specification.

Technology Review: Emerging Technologies and their Impact
The "Viiv" PC is Intel's bid to put itself at the center of the home digital entertainment industry.
Viiv is designed to provide a “10-foot local experience,” Leszinske says, so that consumers can download media and watch movies, television and photo slideshows, listen to music, or play video games from the comfort of their couches.
Viiv depends on three disparate components: a powerful computer containing the Digital Home Express chipset and other technology, devices that can connect to a Viiv-enabled PC, and Intel’s partnerships with companies that will provide content.

CE Pro § Sticking Up for Intel's Viiv
Viiv has a slightly snappier ring to it than Media Center Edition and a much better sound than Windows XP Media Center Edition, which is how the folks at Microsoft like to promote the platform.
Viiv is getting people -- both consumers and the channel -- talking about MCE and for that we should thank Intel.
I don't think it's fair to say that people questioning the hype of Viiv are being "unduly harsh." When the company doesn't give meaty details that match their level of marketing, it's perfectly legitimate to ask questions and dismiss the hype if good answers aren't given.

Intel's Hard-to-Define Viiv Doesn't Live Up to the Hype
Viiv (pronounced like "five") would make possible such novel feats as watching new movie releases online, catching South Africa's evening news in London and beaming video from one TV to another within your house.
Intel says that Viiv (http://www.intel.com/viiv) is still developing, that an update in the second half of this year will bring more features, and that the best Viiv devices are yet to come.
Viiv's ingredients start with a dual-core Intel processor, which allows the computer to handle demanding video playback while also taking care of other chores, such as burning a CD or running a spyware scan.

Interestingly, the Viiv software will also be able to transcode and scale video files on the fly in order to cater to a variety of external devices, many of which require file formats and resolutions that differ from the default specifications used by Viiv.
Yet that doesn't mean that in order to take full advantage of Viiv's streaming capabilities, users will have to purchase new networking and home theatre equipment or go through the painful process of updating the software of their existing components.
As such, Intel is encouraging Viiv content providers to allow users to pass their media to other devices -- a factor that's critical to the success of the Viiv concept.

ViiV computers could come in the traditional PC form factor that we know -- with monitor, keyboard and big tower casing.
Or, ViiV computers could come in small cases much like a set-top box for cable TV, although Intel refuses to call them set-top boxes because, it said, these appliances are fully functional PCs without the trimmings.
ViiV thus acts as a nerve center for digital content to manage files such as MP3 music, digital photos, home videos, on-demand movies, downloadable games and other digital entertainment content.

These computers would also turn on and off instantly like a television, be controlled using a remote rather than a keyboard and a mouse, and could easily replace TiVo or other set-top boxes that are already in the living room, he said.

Viiv-based PCs will be able to manage and reformat media for other Viiv-compatible devices, so users should be able to transfer video content, say, from a camcorder to their computer, and from their computer to their DVR and portable video player with relative transparency, with each device receiving content optimized for its capabilities.
But Viiv's success as a technology label will likely hinge on its inclusiveness and compatibility, rather than upon the exclusivity of its partnerships.
