Catapult.  The Catapult 130mm self-propelled artillery system integrates the Russian M-46 130mm field gun with a lengthened Vijayanta chassis.  The main changes in the lengthened chassis are the removal of the turret and the fitting of an additional roadwheel on each side.  The vehicle carries a total of 32 130mm projectiles and charges.
Despite some indications that 1,100 Vijayanta tanks could be upgraded under the Bison program, our latest research puts the highest figure at 700.
Although the Mark 1 is essentially the same as the Vijayanta, there are some minor differences in equipment and internal layout, accounting for the 1.4 tonne increased weight of the Vijayanta over the standard Mark 1.

The army will retire its fleet of 2,141 Vijayanta tanks by 2007 and replace it with Ajeya, the locally built Russian-designed T-72 M1, and the newly acquired Russian T-90s, which are expected to begin arriving by the year-end, Jane's Defence Weekly reported on Wednesday.
Indian armoured corps personnel and engineering staff are undergoing training in Russia on the T-90s, which will also be built locally under licence at the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi near Madras.
Singh said the Vijayantas, first inducted into the army in 1966, had "outlived their expected life and are in the process of being phased out".

As time has passed, so have a number of the companies willing to keep up with the changing requirements for a programme that many are unsure has the funding to complete a purchase once a selection is actually made.
In 1987, in an effort to make use of the large number of Vijayanta tanks and M-46 130mm field guns, the two were mated and the resulting SPG became known as the Catapult.
Several companies participated in that evaluation that was ultimately replaced by a requirement that the turreted-gun system be mounted on the indigenously built T-72M1 chassis.

So instead of developing the Vijayanta with a new engine-transmission package, a new state-of-the-art Main Battle Tank (MBT) became a recurring demand.

Had India followed the same path she would have had a better Vijayanta, possibly Vijayanta II ready to take over the task of the main battle tank even while developing a so-called super-tank to eventually become the nation's tank for strike formations.
