The earliest extant poetry in tripadi meter are the Kappe Arabhatta records of 700 C.E. The first well known Kannada poet was Pampa who wrote in an archaic style of kannada called Halegannada (literally "Old Kannada").
His Vikramarjuna Vijaya is hailed as a classic even to this day.
With this and his other important work Adipurana he set a trend of poetic excellence for the Kannada poets of the future.

He finally settled himself as a poet in the court of Arikesari II, a prince of the Chalukya family and a feudatory of the Rashtrakuta monarch Krishna III.
In 942 A.D. when he was thirty-nine years old he composed the ‘Adipurna’, a few years later, he produced ‘Vikramarjuna Vijaya’ popularly known as Pampa Bharata.
His poem was called Vikramarjuna Vijaya the victory of the mighty Arjuna.

They inherited the cultural tradition of Karnataka, spoke Kannada as their mother tongue and almost all their inscriptions are in Kannada.
Although some scholars argue that it was written by his court - poet, Sri Vijaya Ponna, the famous Kannada poet, who was also patronized by Krishna II, and was honoured with the title, Kavichakravarthi.
Other famous works in Kannada were Adipurana and Vikramarjuna Vijaya or Pampa Bharata by Adikavi Pampa, (was patronized by Arikesari of Vemulavada, who was a feudatory of the Rashtrakutas), Asaga wrote Vardhamana Purana, Shivakoti Acharya's Vaddaradhane, probably the earliest prose work, Chavundarayapurana by Chavundaraya.

Looking at early Kannada literary texts like Kaviraja Maarga and Vikramarjuna Vijaya (10th century), this paper tries to argue that employing binaries such as western/indian, colonial/indigenous, Kannada/Sanskrit would not do.
The paper identifies the existing pitfalls in theorizing pre-colonial translation practices and suggests that the complex matrix in which the practice is embedded has to be unearthed in further research in this area.

Pampa Bharata or Vikramarjuna Vijaya was written in honor of his friend and patron Chalukya Arikesari, a feudatory to Rashtrakuta kings.
The second work is a heroic poem dealing with the last phase of the Mahabharata war with Bhima as hero.
