Viktor Korchnoi (Ви́ктор Льво́вич Корчно́й) (born March 23 1931) is sometimes reckoned to be the strongest chess player never to have been world champion.
It was during this match that an often repeated story occurred: Korchnoi got up from the board during one of the games, walked over to the arbiter and, showing a surprising ignorance of the rules, asked whether he could legally castle in the current position.

Viktor Lvovich Korchnoi was born March 23rd, 1931 in Leningrad.
Korchnoi left the USSR in 1976, and two years later he finally managed to win the Candidates and qualify to play Karpov for the title.
It seems Korchnoi also impressed the arbiter and the first game is played again(?) Of course it must have been a drawn position and Fressinet decided to be the good host for his famous opponent.
