This caused his thoughts to return to imaginative literature, and it was in the feuilleton of this journal (the Goteborgs Handels-och sjofartstidning) that Viktor Rydbergs romances successively appeared; he was editorially connected with it until 1876.
In Viktor Rydberg Sweden possessed a writer of the first order, who carried on the tradition of BostrOm and Geijer in philo~iophy and history, and possessed in addition a glow of imaginaion and a marvellous charm of style.
His premature death was the subject of national mourning, and had even a historical significance, for with him the old romantic influence in Swedish literature ceased to be paramount.

The activity of the evil principle has in the great epic of the myth, formed a continuity spanning all ages, and this continuous thread of evil is twisted from the treacherous deeds of Gullveig and Loki, the feminine and the masculine representations of the evil principle.

! Assembly of The Elder Troth - Article - Our Father's Godsaga - Reviewed by Dirk Schmitt
Viktor Rydberg was born in 1828 and died in 1895.
He was a Swedish poet, journalist, and scholar, whom is considered by some as a heretic, whose ideas on Germanic mythology are a cobbled together mish-mash, trying to be squeezed into some contiguous whole.
In short, this book is well worth the money, and whilst Rydberg may not be 100% on the mark all the time, there is definitely sufficient value in this work to recommend it to anyone interested in the Germanic Mythos.

Viktor Rydberg's interpretations are of interest, but misguided.
The 20th century doesn't offer many academic treatments of Þórsdrápa. I have inspected Wilhelm Kiil's edition, which may be largely ignored, apart from the fact that it offers a more detailed treatment of manuscript variants than Jónsson's edition.

Other authors have acknowledged and commended Rydberg's work on Saxo Grammaticus' Danish History: "The first 9 books of Saxo form a labyrinth constructed out of the myths related as history, but the thread of Ariadne seems to be wanting.
The fact that they both at one time live in Asgard and at another time oppose the gods of Asgard, and that they both use weapons described as "teinn" (Gambanteinn, and Mistleteinn, which are also compared in kennings), as well as other traits, support Saxo's combination of the two.
It is very difficult to illustrate in this format and is best done by Rydberg in a series of chapters in the 3rd Volume of the English translation of Teutonic Mythology.

Valid or not, I find this "psychological" interpretation much more satisfying than the euhemerized version to be found in Sturlusson, though I suppose it doesn't necessarily exclude some sort of tribal war as an origin.
