  Cover Story
Viktoria Mullova sits across from me at the large wooden table in the kitchen of her home, a recently built house in a neighborhood not far from London's famous Notting Hill.
Mullova says she was drawn to the period-instrument world by the "fantastic, vast repertoire" of early music and her admiration for certain authentic instrument ensembles.
Mullova was particularly impressed with Il Giardino Armonico, a period-instrument band based in Italy that's led by recorder player Giovanni Antonini, a "wonderful musician whom I respect enormously." She jumped at the chance to play with them two years ago and will be recording Vivaldi with them in the near future.

“Violinist Viktoria Mullova was a commanding presence…an austere and compelling performance of Bartok’s second violin concerto…Mullova’s sound had a kind of austerity, a sense of control even in the wildest of flurries of notes.
“[Viktoria Mullova] is one of the few mainstream fiddle virtuosi to have embraced the period-instrument revolution… She has restrung her 1723 “Julius Falk” Strad with gut, uses a “classical” bow and avoids the overtly Romantic style prevalent among violinists of her background.
She still brings an expressive sweetness to the adagio of the G major concerto, but this is tempered by the astringency of the OAE’s wind and string textures.

We have read and heard lots of good things about Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova and were anxious to hear her new recording of five Vivaldi concerti that came out this fall.
Mullova does not generally consult historical sources as a means of justifying her interpretation as 'authentic' but is as faithful as possible to the score in matters of ornamentation and phrasing.
Though Mullova intends to research ornamentation in the future, it is worth emphasizing that all of the Baroque era's abundant performance styles could be drawn upon to support any given modern interpretation of this repertoire.

BBC - Classical Review - Mozart: Violin Concertos, Viktoria Mullova
Maybe that's why Mullova has her undeserved ice-queen reputation; we're not used to hearing players of her provenance and prowess placing themselves quietly in the hands of the composer, without the emotional histrionics and interpretative licence taken by some of her peers.
Not Mullova; while she doesn't have the quicksilver sound and instinctive mastery of the classical bow, and perhaps not quite the full range of tone colours that gut strings can deliver in the hands of a seasoned period instrumentalist, she's fluent, warm, and surprisingly gentle.
Viktoria Mullova is really one of the most brilliant violinists of our time, at least she has been my favourite since I heard her playing Tchaikovsky´s Violin Concerto in St. Michel in 1994.

Mullova has, in essence, moved towards authentic performance practice, a relatively rare but significant step for a modern-style player, although she has not entirely abandoned modern-style techniques.
Mullova's articulation is crisp, her sense of musical line is impeccable, her cognizance of the works' architecture is even more impressive, her tone is warm (if a bit lean, as it's always been), she moves through many of the movements with a lightness and "bounce," and there's a beautiful, balanced lucidity to the performance.
Even then, when Mullova was still in her twenties, she displayed a remarkable maturity and a concern for the purpose of each note and phrase.

Mullova, however, has a number of recordings that I simply would not want to be without: Brahms' violin sonatas, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Shostakovitch's First Violin Concerto, Stravinsky's Violin Concerto, and, especially, Bach's Partitas.
I wish that Mullova would indeed receive more recognition on this side of the Atlantic, that her recordings would remain in print, and that Philips would care a little less about sales figures and allow her to venture more widely through the repertoire.
Fortunately, Mullova does seem to have been reinvigorated in the past several years, especially in period-instrument recordings, and she will be on a heavy concert tour in 2005.

It's impossible to find fault with this exceptional disc by Viktoria Mullova, which should satisfy fans of authentic Baroque performance as well as of contemporary violin playing.
Mullova also manages to sound completely natural and uncontrived in the complicated improvisatory passages - track 2 of the same concerto is a particularly good example of this.
A well-established Baroque ensemble, led by recorder player Giovanni Antonini since 1989, they produce all kinds of different tone-colours and subtle bowing effects, and their playing is consistently rhythmical and exciting even in the softer passages (listen especially to track 3 and the breathtaking track 10).
