Hazrat Inayat Khan (July 5, 1882 - February 5, 1927), founder of Universal Sufism, and the Sufi Movement International, came to the west as a representative of several musical traditions of his native India.
At the end of his apprenticeship, Inayat Khan was enjoined by his teacher to travel to the West and work at developing a culture that combined the wisdom of the east and the rational scientific outlook of the west.
His sons, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan and Pir Hidayat Inayat Khan, and grandson, Pir Zia Inayat Khan, have continued their father's teaching role.

I was struck by something Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan said at the Leaders' retreat a couple of years ago.
Pir Vilayat went on to tell of his experience of leading a group in meditation in which they were focusing on bringing light into their auras.
Again and again, Pir Vilayat has emphasized the aspect of worship as a reflection of the Cosmic Celebration in the Heavens, and he emphasizes our need for glorification, for our awakening to the sense of glory and splendor which we have lost in the trivial day-to-day mechanics of our lives.
