A village green is an area of common grass land at the centre of a settlement.
Greens are increasingly rare and are mainly to be found in the older villages of mainland Europe, and the United Kingdom.
A notable example of a village green is that in the village of Finchingfield[?] in the English county of Essex, which is said to be "the most photographed village in England" [1] (http://www.digitalessex.com/pages/finchingfield/).

The green is traditionally at a central location and provides an open-air meeting place for the people of a village, for example at times of celebration, or for public ceremonies.
New Haven was founded by settlers from England and was the first planned city in the United States.
A notable example of a village green is that in the village of Finchingfield in the English county of Essex, which is said to be “the most photographed village in England.” The green dominates the village, and slopes down to a duck pond, and is occasionally flooded when it has been raining too much.

Like the rest of Great Neck, the Village was almost exclusively farm and orchard from its settlement in the 1660's into the 19th century.
Most of the Village’s oldest stores and institutions were along a small section of Middle Neck Road near the present Village Green - Great Neck’s first four schools, the oldest church, its oldest Synagogue, first bank, library, telephone switchboard, post office, voting hall and fire house.
The Village experienced several real estate booms, especially after direct rail service to NYC was provided in the early parts of the century.

The Village of New Hempstead, in the Town of Ramapo, County of Rockland, State of New York was formed in 1983 to enhance uniformity in the setting and application of land use zoning regulations.
The arrivals called it New Hempstead (It was frequently spelled Hampstead and it is suspected that was the intended spelling), and the legislature confirmed this as the name of a township extracted from Haverstraw in 1791.
In 1797 the legislature passed an Act changing it to Hempstead, "That the town of New Hempstead, in Orange County, shall hereafter be called and distinguished by the name of Hempstead, any law, usage, or custom to the contrary not withstanding." Although it was called Hempstead, older residents continued to refer to it as Kakiat.
