Carnegie vibe for Village Vanguard - Newsday.com   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Village Vanguard is a 71- year-old subterranean Greenwich Village nightspot that has come to be regarded as jazz's "holy dive." There are many reasons to love the club and its grumpy-but-lovable owner Lorraine Gordon, and both were deservedly honored Monday night with an all-star JVC Jazz Festival tribute at Carnegie Hall.
Monday's concert was more the former than the latter - though it was unfortunate that the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, as solid a pillar of the city's artistic life as the club that's nurtured it for 40-plus years, was forced to make a perfunctory end to its closing set to make the 11 p.m.
The latter's name came up again during the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra's climactic set, when they were joined by saxophonist and orchestra alum Joe Lovano for one of the band's typically adventurous and rousing arrangements.

Billboard.com - Discography (more) - Geri Allen With Charlie Haden & Paul Motian - Live at the Village Vanguard
What a shame this trio didn't keep working together longer -- the finely honed veteran rhythm section of Charlie Haden and Paul Motian was a match made in heaven for Geri Allen, the most stylistically versatile and creative pianist of her generation.
But praise the music gods they managed to record as much as they did, even though Live at the Village Vanguard may not be the best starting point to sample the interaction of this creatively balanced trio.
Live at the Village Vanguard is a good CD musically, but there's not much jump-up factor here -- it's moody and very bluesy in feeling if not actual form, almost like chamber jazz at times.

Bill Evans :Sunday at the Village Vanguard
The Bill Evans trio had been playing together for nearly two years by the time these dates at the Village Vanguard were recorded, but the group was underrecorded because Evans, ever the perfectionist, was reluctant to commit "final" performances of these compositions to vinyl.
Evans believed that the trio should be a meeting of equals, with the bass and drums taking on a more active role than the timekeeping to which they were usually relegated.
This concept is heard very clearly on Sunday at the Village Vanguard--LaFaro plays around the chords and is able to compliment Evans' piano stylings while Motian is able to provide much more coloration than the usual drumwork.

Unlike the knotty difficulties in trying to untie the various knots in the "Classic Quartet" box of Impulse recordings, the Vanguard sessions represent something else in the canon of John Coltrane's work.
In 1961, Coltrane was still experimenting with his quartet format and trying to work in the proper coloration of voicings needed to give his music the proper force and expression he pictured it to have.
Originally, the Vanguard performances were released on four different albums: "Impressions" (two of the four tracks it featured), "Live at the Village Vanguard", "The Other Village Vanguard Tapes", "Trane's Modes", and "From the Original Master Tapes".
