Village Weaver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Village Weaver (Ploceus cucullatus) is a resident breeding bird species in much of sub-Saharan Africa, and has been introduced to Haiti.
This weaver builds a large coarsely woven nest made of grass and leaf strips with a downward facing entrance which is suspended from a branch in a tree.
Village Weaver feeds principally on seeds and grain, and can be a crop pest, but it will readily take insects, especially when feeding young, which partially redresses the damage to agriculture.

Just how highly a village weaver is regarded is best indicated by the fact that the decision as to whether the weaver could be photographed or even watched at her work was usually made by the weaver, while in other crafts practiced by women it was always made by the women's husbands or eldest sons.
The main difference between the approach of other craftsmen and weavers in these kind of dialogues is that the women concern themselves with a person's family duties as well as his or her community responsibilities.
The two major markets for the weaver's carpets are the people in her own village or those in the nearby Bedouin encampments which are occupied during late summer and fall.

INHERITANCE OF EGG-COLOR POLYMORPHISM IN THE VILLAGE WEAVER (PLOCEUS CUCULLATUS)
In the weaver genus Ploceus, with approxi- mately 60 species (Moreau and Greenway 1962), white and bluish or blue-green eggs are com- mon, and green eggs less so, while brown as a ground color for the egg shell of different spe- cies is least frequent (Mackworth-Praed and Grant 1960, 1963, 1973, Meise 1983:519-521).
Another reason for high egg variability in the Village Weaver may be as a defense against ob- ligate nest parasites, such as the Didric Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx caprius), the most common nest parasite of the Village Weaver (Chapin 1954, Friedmann 1968, Victoria 1969, 1972, Collias and Collias 1970, Collias 1984).
The different races of the Village Weaver have similar variations in egg color and pattern, in which ground color varies from white through blues to greens, and from plain eggs to eggs spotted to varying degrees usually with brown or reddish brown.
