During her heyday, Hollywood leading actress Vilma Banky was billed as "The Hungarian Rhapsody." She was born Vilma Lonchit, near Budapest at the turn-of-the-century.
She was discovered by Sam Goldwyn who was taken by her exquisite beauty and brought her to Hollywood in 1925 to star opposite Rudolph Valentino in The Eagle, and subsequently, The Son of the Sheik (1926).
Banky died in 1991, but news of her passing was not announced until 1992 for it was the embittered Banky's dying request that her death not be formally announced.

Vilma Bánky (January 9, 1898 - March 18, 1991) was a Hungarian-born American silent film actress, although the early part of her acting career began in Budapest, spreading to France, Austria, and Germany.
She was born either Vilma Konsics Bánky(some believeVilma Lonchit as many sources have erroneously reported this) to Johann Konsics Bánky and Katalin Ulbert in Nagydorog, Austria-Hungary, and began appearing in films in 1920, her first film being Im Letzten Augenblick, directed by Carl Boese in Germany.
On a trip to Budapest in 1925, Hollywood film producer Samuel Goldwyn discovered the violet-eyed, blonde beauty and signed her to a contract.

Vilma married actor Rod La Rocque in 1927, in an extravagant wedding paid for by Goldwyn, and it was a record marital union in Hollywood that was to last decades, until Rod's death in 1969.
With the coming of sound Vilma's film career in Hollywood was basically over, since she barely spoke English, and she had a distinct accent which would have limited her American roles in any case.

Gary Cooper's long screen career began in a Banky showcase as he attempted "The Winning of Barbara Worth" (1926), but the ethereal star's most notable leading man was Ronald Colman, opposite whom she acted five times during her brief Hollywood heyday.
And so Banky retired from acting only several years after marrying silent matinee idol Rod LaRocque (whose career continued in character roles into the 1940s) in 1927.
The public remained unaware of Banky's death in March of 1991 until the end of the following year; the aging star had become ill in the early 80s and, embittered by the lack of attention she received, decreed that no notice of her death be issued.
