Vilnius University (Lithuanian Vilniaus Universitetas, Polish Uniwersytet Wileński, formerly Stefan Batory University) is the oldest university in Eastern Europe and the biggest university in Lithuania.
After Vilnius region was annexed by Poland, on August 20, 1919 by the act of Józef Piłsudski the vilnian academy was restored under the new name of Stefan Batory University (Uniwersytet Stefana Batorego).
In early 1940 the University was re-opened as a Lithuanian-only school.

Vilnius University (former Academia Vilnensis Societatis Jesus) Library was established in 1570 on the basis of two large collections which were donated to Vilnius Academy by the two Vilnius bibliophiles of 16 th century, Georgius Albinius, the Bishop of Vilnius, and Sigismundus Augustus, the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.
In 1832 the Vilnius University was closed and the library was distributed among various institutions, like the faculty of medicine (about 16,000 volumes), the faculty of theology (about 20,000 volumes), the universities of Kiev and Charkov, schools of Byelorussia.
Vilnius University Library e-catalogue was the first of its kind in the Baltic countries, and has been Internet accessible since 1994.

By the second decade of the 19th century, the Vilnius University ranked among the leading universities in the Russian Empire; the revival of academic research had positive effect on the Library as well.
University of Lithuania was established in Kaunas on February 16, 1922; from 1930 it was called the Vytautas Magnus University.
Five volumes of Vilnius University Library Chronicles were published in the period since 1958, and in 1998 the Library prepared and released its first (UNESCO sponsored) compact disc entitled Historical Collections of the Vilnius University Library in Lithuanian, English, and French.

The teaching of chemistry at the University was introduced in the 18th century when Martynas Pocobutas, the Rector of the old Almae Matris, decided to establish a College of Medicine where among other subjects chemistry was to be taught.
The Universities both in Kaunas and in Vilnius were training specialists in chemistry and had several Chemistry Departments each, which were integrated into Chemistry Sections of the Faculties of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
At the end of World War Two, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Vilnius University was divided into the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Chemistry.

Technical background for creation of library system was delivery in 1992 to Vilnius University and other Lithuanian universities of several ND (Norsk Data, Norway) minicomputers as a technical help for initiation of Norway-Lithuania computerization project.
In 1994 on-line catalogue module was added and as the library system computer was connected to the Vilnius University computer network that had connection to the Internet at that time already, at the same time library system became accessible from the Internet.
The main goal of the project was to port Vilnius University Library system to modern hardware and database platform and to give opportunity for libraries participating in the project to acquire appropriate hardware in order to install BIBLIO library system in their libraries.
