The island of Vilsandi, Estonia is located in the Baltic Sea.
Much of the island is now covered by the Vilsandi National Park, which grew from a bird reserve founded in 1910.
It is a highly sensitive ecosytem due to the use of the area by many migratory birds as a breeding and nesting ground.

To the north of Vilsandi is Vesiloo island.
During World War II Vilsandi and its bird sanctuaries were completely destroyed, as was the group of birds that Artur Toom had used for his studies thruout the years.
Therefore, the rebirth of Vilsandi is dated to 7 June 1957, when the bird sactuary was reestablished to cover an area of over 180 square miles.
