Vincent Browne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vincent Browne is one of Ireland's best-known and most controversial print and broadcast journalists.
Browne refused to agree to the release of this statement when he was allowed sight of 81 transcripts of telephone conversations that had been intercepted.
Browne sought to have the agreement altered to permit a public acknowledgement that the intercepts were not done for security reasons.

Browne backtracks after pro paedophile column sparks fury - Irish Nationalism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
WRITER and broadcaster Vincent Browne has said he may not have been "sufficiently clear" when he wrote in the Irish Times that viewing graphic images of child sex abuse "causes no harm".
Browne has been forced to backtrack after his column triggered a furious backlash from readers who have bombarded the paper's editor, Geraldine Kennedy, with angry letters and phone calls.
Browne's views led to criticism from the Rape Crisis Centre and to letters of complaint about the Wednesday column in which he wrote: "I cannot see the legitimacy of criminalising simply the viewing of child pornography, when no payment is made for the material.

Western People: Vincent Browne should go to more funerals
But of course there is. While Browne’s point is well made and while he has described well the faithless situation of a growing number of Irish people today, he didn’t need to go to Canada to witness faith-people incorporating the reality of death into their faith-experience of life.
There’s a great sadness in Browne’s words on Janine’s death, a sadness not just with the loss of her life and what it means to his brother Malachy and her daughters but a sadness in Browne himself that the faith that gives the grieving such comfort and hope is not now part of his life.
Vincent Browne was taken by how the faith of those present, including Janine’s young daughters, comforted and strengthened the grieving.

 The Rittenhouse Review
Terrorism “expert” Norah Vincent now has her own weblog, Norah’s LogJam, a mess of a website at which anyone with a browser can stumble across what is sure to be a growing collection of incoherent and discursive Peggy Noonan-esque essays rejected by editors across the land.
Vincent’s recent career path remains a mystery, as does the esteem with which she is regarded in certain circles, albeit right-wing enclaves not known for maintaining particularly high standards.
Vincent is not an intellectual, she is not an original thinker, she performs virtually no reportage, and she isn’t even a good writer.

 Paddy Doyle: Newspaper Articles
Vincent Browne asks in his column of August 18th: "Will the act of viewing [images of child abuse] itself cause harm?" We have no stronger case to make than the assertion that without exception every survivor of child abuse will answer yes, yes and yes again.
Vincent Browne also bemoans the fact that what he describes as "subsidiary issues" should detract from his main point.
While we commend Mr Browne for raising this difficult issue and for demanding action on the control of these crimes, his "subsidiary issues" do unfortunately undermine much of the good he was trying to achieve.

Western People: Just A Thought: Is Vincent Browne doing too much?
Browne informed his weary listeners recently that he had travelled to Monaghan one day and to North Kerry another day and he seemed to imagine that such occasional pilgrimages among the rural unwashed qualified him to speak about the needs of rural Ireland.
But the ultimate for me in Browne's infallible posturing is when he generalises from his own particular experience to general conclusions, even though the survey he conducts clearly has only a sample of one.
Browne's point is that this Cardinal, full of his own self-importance and delighting in meeting, in some way represents what he calls that "spectacular pride" at the heart of the Church's "empire", despite the revelations of scandals that have taken hierarchies in America and Ireland "down a few pegs".

Browne again insisted that no union contractors had been allowed to submit bids and stated he could not allow the project to go forward without an electrical union contractor on the job and that he intended to picket the site and engage in "mass demonstrations" if that was the case.
Browne, according to Ponticello, also mentioned that he could throw up a picket line in 30 days and that no one would be allowed to come in or out of the jobsite, resulting in delays for the Cheltenham project.
Vincent Ponticello claims he walked away at that point, and that Browne kept his car in the same blocking position for about 15-30 minutes, thus preventing him from completing his chore, after which he drove away.

In the Irish Times today, Vincent Browne criticises Bertie Ahern for adopting the “move along now” response to the Stormont spy-ring case, and takes a swing at some others in the media too.
Unfortunately, in Vincent’s conspiracy theory, which he’s promoted on a few occasions recently, not only does he fail to mention that others, including SF, have adopted that “move along now” response, but he has his bare facts wrong.
If he was an agent-provocateur, as Vincent seems to believe, and as Sinn Féin claim, then the British Government are the main culprits in this and should be held to account.

Richard Delevan's sicNotes: Vincent Browne and Blasphemy
Vincent Browne, the Devil's Advocate-General of Ireland, posits in today's Irish Times that it is settled European law that freedom of expression "is qualified by a right of citizens not to be offended in their religious feelings by publications."
As well Vincent might, having described the Lord's Prayer as "pious gobbledegook" in a January 2001 Irish Times column and been pilloried for his trouble.
Much as I think Vincent an excellent interlocutor and a first-class intellect, he has a real problem here - because the two sentiments cannot be reconciled without so stretching the meanings of "free expression" and "blasphemy" that it causes the ghost of Orwell to rise from his grave and strike you down.

Browne is unhappy about Tony O'Reilly's ownership of the media and scandals associated with O'Reilly's companies.
