Vincent was once again unhappy with the direction the band was taking, wanting to move away from the dark, almost satanic image portrayed by their second album, towards a lighter, funk/soul sound.
Vincent decided once again to change the sound of Rooster - gone were the heavy Hammond organ-dominated riffs, and in its place were piano and synthesiser compositions, with the organ non-existent or far back in the mix.
Vincent was unable to persuade John DuCann to play on the album, but John suggested Bernie Torme as a replacement., and Tom Newman, who produced the album was a close friend of Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour and managed to arrange for him to play on some of the compositions.

In the meantime, Vincent Crane had gained notoriety as one the longest surviving musicians in the British rock scene.
When Nick Graham left the Rooster, they became as a trio, with Vincent Crane playing bass on the lower part of his organ keyboard (only later did he start to use a set of bass pedals, as on this current release).
Crane and DuCann got in RIC PARNELL as a replacement, but the new line-up didn't quite gel and it wasn't long before Parnell had to be replaced by PAUL HAMMOND.

During their tour of the U.S. the band had a number of management and contractual problems and they split half way through the tour, and it was also during this time that Vincent's latent psychiatric problems first became a problem in the form of bizarre manic escapades, followed by long periods of depression in hospital.
Atomic Rooster MkI consisted of: Vincent Crane - Hammond organ and piano, Carl Palmer - drums, and Nick Graham - bass and vocals.
Vincent reworked several compositions he had had for a number of years, and put together a new album, titled Headline News.

The band ceased to exist until the ealy 80's, when Vincent Crane and John Ducann with several drummers teamed up once again, and during the NWOBHM(New Wave of British Heavy Metal), had some hits in the charts, like "Lose Your Mind" and a remake of "Tomorrow Night".
After this stint, Crane went on to join "Dexy's Midnight Runners" in the mid-80s.He died on February 14, 1989.

In 1981 or early '82, shortly after leaving Gillan, I was asked by the great Vincent Crane to play in Atomic Rooster on two tours in Germany and Italy, following some unspecified disagreement between Vincent and Rooster's long standing guitarist, John Cann.
Vincent had also jammed and played with legends like the Doors, Hendrix, Ginger Baker, Paul McCartney, Stomu Yamashta and far too many others to mention.
Vincent sadly committed suicide some years ago, to be followed a few months later by drummer Paul Hammond who died of a drug overdose.

On this 1972 release, Vincent Crane played Hammond B3, Grand Piano, and foot pedal bass (all @ the same time) in a very aggressive, rocking style behind a very heavy and funky rhythm section...that often reminds me of Bonham and Page, with Emerson soloing over the top.

Vincent Crane elected to continue the band and with guitarist John Cann and drummer Paul Hammond recorded the second Atomic Rooster album Death Walks Behind You.
The material here is pretty much split between Cann and Crane and the songs are a big improvement on the debut album that was less than a year behind the group at this point.
The legacy he left behind however with Atomic Rooster is a sizeable one and one that is still influencing musicians to this day which is a fitting tribute to the man and his music.

Vincent Crane's Hammond organ is not so much in evidence with the piano being used to great effect on a lot of the songs.
Vincent Crane unable to control his inner demons any longer took his own life on Valentine's Day 1989, He was sadly followed by Paul Hammond who could not cope with life outside of his beloved Rooster in 1991.
Vincent performed spectacular solos on almost every song, although there's not much in the way of guitar solos, which ended up causing dissension in the group.
