By directing their preferences to the Liberal Party, the DLP played a key role in keeping Labor out of office in Australia from 1955 to 1972.
In 1974, Gough Whitlam offered the DLP leader, Senator Vincent Gair, the ambassadorship to Ireland, in the hope that his departure would make it easier for Labor to obtain a Senate majority in the forthcoming double dissolution election.
Although Whitlam's ploy was foiled by Joh Bjelke-Petersen, it did have the effect of discrediting the DLP-- the party lost all five of its Senate seats and never recovered.

Parliament of Australia: Senate: Publications: Odgers' Guide to Australian Senate Practice - Eleventh Edition - Chapter ...
The specific background to this decision of the Opposition parties was the announcement that Senator Vincent Gair, a former Premier of Queensland and a former Leader of the Democratic Labor Party in the Senate, had accepted an appointment as Australian Ambassador to Ireland.
As Gair’s term did not expire until 30 June 1977, his appointment was seen as creating a sixth vacancy in Queensland: there was speculation that the additional vacancy would improve the government’s chances of winning a third seat in Queensland and thus improve its chances of securing a majority in the Senate.
Second, while the simultaneous dissolutions of 1914 and 1951 had been granted on the basis of a single bill only, that of 1974 was granted on the basis of six bills believed to meet the terms of section 57 of the Constitution.
