Vincent Lopez began his first band around 1917 and by the early 20's was one of the most popular dance bandleaders in the country along with Paul Whiteman, Isham Jones and Ted Lewis to name a select few.
The Lopez orchestra was also the first dance band to broadcast live on the "wireless" at the pioneer radio station WJZ on November 27, 1921.
Vincent Lopez has long been a student of numerology and has authored two interesting books, "What's Ahead" and "Musical Horoscope." His next volume, "My Key to Life or What I Learned in a Monastery," is scheduled for publication in December.

Vincent Lopez was born of Portuguese immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York and was leading his own dance band in New York City by 1917.
In 1941 Lopez's Orchestra began a residency at the Taft Hotel in Manhattan that would last 20 years.

Pianist and orchestra leader Vincent Lopez is best remembered for his discovery of singer and actress Betty Hutton and for his theme song, ''Nola.'' His style of piano playing inspired such future stars as Liberace and Eddy Duchin.
Lopez originally studied for the priesthood but decided to go into music instead, forming his first orchestra during the 1920s.
Working with Lopez was considered a prime job by local musicians because the orchestra finished its shift by 9 p.m.

My feeling is that the Vincent Lopez Ampico arrangements were the work of Carroll and Fairchild, and their intent was to make extremely full, "flashy" sounding arrangements which gave the listener the impression of the Lopez orchestra.
In listening to the old Vincent Lopez Orches- tra 78-rpm recordings, one can readily hear that Carroll and Fairchild were quite successful.
As far as Vincent Lopez as a pianist, I remember seeing a Vitaphone short film featuring him and his orchestra, done in the early 1930's.

Lopez played with his orchestra, he often didn't even use much left hand, so that would have to be arranged in as well.
As I understand (and it may be just hearsay) for his debut with Ampico, the Ampico Corp. had Vincent and his band to the factory for a tour and PR photos, which they could hand out to any publications so interested.
Lopez may or may not have played a few of his numbers on the registering piano there, but if he did so, they were probably just for the sake of the editors in getting details of his individual striking and pedaling correct.
