Vincent of Beauvais - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dominican friar Vincent of Beauvais (ca 1190 - 1264?) wrote the main encyclopedia that was used in the middle ages.
Though Vincent may well have been summoned to Royaumont even before 1240, there is no actual proof that he lived there before the return of Louis IX and his wife from the Holy Land, early in the summer of 1254.
Other works of Vincent of Beauvais are: De eruditione filiorum regalium ('On the education of princes') and a "Tractatus consolatorius de morte amici" ('Consolation upon the death of a friend'), addressed to Louis on the death of one of his sons in 1260.

Vincent's Charlemagne is a curious medley of the great emperor of history and the champion of romance.
One remarkable feature of the Speculum Historiale is Vincent's constant habit of devoting several chapters to selections from the writings of each great author, whether secular or profane, as he mentions him in the course of his work.

VINCENT OF BEAUVAIS - LoveToKnow Article on VINCENT OF BEAUVAIS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
There is no evidence to show that the Vincent who was sub-prior of this foundation in 1246 is the encyclopaedist; nor indeed is it likely that a man of such abnormally studious habits could have found time to attend to the daily business routine of a monastic establishment.
It is certain, however, that he at one time held the post of " reader " at the monastery of Royaumont (Mons Regalis), not far from Paris, on the Oise, founded by St Louis between 1228 and 1235.
Though Vincent may well have been summoned to Royaumont even before r 240, there is no actual proof that he lived there before the return of Louis IX.

 Vincent of Beauvais
It is thought that Vincent joined the Dominicans in Paris shortly after 1218; with the exception of visits to Louis IX at Royaumont, he spent all his religious life in the monastery at Beauvais.
A man of industry, Vincent undertook a systematic and comprehensive treatment of all branches of human knowledge.
Other works of Vincent of Beauvais are: "De eruditione filiorum regalium"; "Tractatus consolatorius de morte amici", addressed to St. Louis on the death of one of his sons in 1260.

The Minnesota volumes led me to think about the Speculum of Vincent of Beauvais and its reception in the monasteries of the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.
