Beck has said that he thinks the painting was produced by one Vincenzo Camuccini in 1827, not by Raphael in 1506, as the Gallery claims.
The Gallery's defense claims that it was purchased in 1810 by Vincenzo Camuccini, a skilled copyist and art dealer.
Further, she said, Camuccini is known to have forged other documents--something not mentioned on the Gallery's Web site.

Despite initial support from the financier Gian Vincenzo Ponzoni, by the late 1790s he was having to earn money through small decorating jobs and sign-painting.
However, Diotti had learnt from the luminosity and sense of colour of Emilian fresco painting as practised by Andrea Appiani, who became his friend and supporter after 1800 when Diotti arrived in Milan.
Here he studied under Vincenzo Camuccini, who had recently completed his Poussinesque frescoes at the Villa Borghese.

Because of his premature death, little is known of Vincenzo Baldacci.
Considering his inclinations for painting and an appreciable technical ability, the Cesena Municipal Authority sponsored a stay in Rome in order to allow him to study at the Accademia di San Luca.
It is in that ambience that he came into contact with the neo-classic style of Vincenzo Camuccini and Felice Giani, as can be seen by the works on show in the Art Gallery:

Before its purchase in Paris around 1810 by painter, copyist and dealer Vincenzo Camuccini, we have few details about the Madonna of the Pinks whereabouts.
The inventory list of the Camuccini collection from the early 1850s states that the painting was made for "Maddalena degli Oddi, a nun from Perugia, from whose heirs a Frenchman acquired it in 1636, taking it to France."
His research led him to believe the painting was actually made in 1827 by none other than Vincenzo Camuccini himself.

Over the altar on the right is the "Incredulity of St. Thomas" by V. Camuccini, which replaces an earlier work on the same subject by Passignano.
The altar of St. Thomas was among the first altars in St. Peter's to be provided with an altarpiece during the pontificate of Urban VIII.
His altarpiece remained in place until around 1822, when it was replaced by a mosaic of the same subject, based on a design by Vincenzo Camuccini (1771-1844)

Around 1830 he moved briefly to Rome in order to study the work of Raphael, Domenichino, Agostino Carracci and Annibale Carracci and to attend the classes of Camuccini, who had recently become director of the Roman branch of the Accademia in Naples.

Prof Beck says the gallery failed to do comparative studies of the various versions of the painting and had not done infra-red reflectography or x-rays of the others.
He claims his research has led him to the 19th Century workshop of Vincenzo Camuccini - a copyist of Raphael.
The National Gallery says it accepts the painting's finish and colouring look different from other Raphaels, but adds that up to 25 experts had confirmed its authenticity.

Also, no copyist before the 20th-century (this painting is recorded well before) could have guessed that the underdrawing would one day be seen and used as a vital clue in identifying authenticity by comparison with other works by the artist.
No copyist, not even the gifted 19th-century copyist Vincenzo Camuccini who owned the picture, would have dreamed of including variations to the composition of a published image, already well known through prints, especially if they wished to pass it off as the lost original.
Since there are also such strong stylistic connections with other Raphael works, the drawing can only be by him.

A US art expert yesterday says the British National Gallery, which shelled out over 41 million bucks for RAPHAEL's painting, "Madonna of the Pinks," actually bought a fake.
Columbia University's JAMES BECK told the NY Times the tiny artwork — which is just 11.4 by nine inches — was actually done in 1827 by VINCENZO CAMUCCINI, a frequent copyist of Raphael and a recognized faker.
And although the National Gallery says there are 40 other versions of the painting that can be found around the world, Beck says there's "at least" five more — and none of them are by Raphael.

Just days after the National Gallery paid the Duke of Northumberland £35m for Raphael's 'Madonna of the Pinks', a leading scholar claimed the painting is a 19th-century forgery.
James Beck, Professor of Art History at Columbia University, said he has discovered a larger version of the painting in a private European collection, and by studying the underdrawing in the National Gallery's picture he said he can even identify the forger as Vincenzo Camuccini.
But the gallery noted that the painting has been authenticated as Raphael's by 25 other experts.
