Vincenzo Gemito, one of the premier Italian sculptors of the 19th century, was essentially self-taught.
Gemito sold a statue to the city of Naples when he was sixteen years old; and he was only twenty-one years old when he was commissioned to model the portrait of Giuseppe Verdi.
Around 1909 Gemito resumed sculpting, incorporating Hellenistic influences into his work, inspired by the works of art that the diggings of Pompeii and Herculaneum had brought to light and which were exhibited in the Archeological Museum in Naples.

La citta' di Napoli by dentronapoli.it: I Pittori napoletani - Vincenzo Gemito

Around this time he formed a close friendship with the painter Antonio Mancini; together they frequented the studio of Stanislao Lista (1824–1908), a sculptor and painter of a more advanced tendency.
There Gemito learnt to model in clay and wax, and he is supposed to have been encouraged by Lista to study the life of the streets.
After leaving Lista’s studio Gemito set up independently in an abandoned convent, working alongside Mancini and the sculptors Achille D’Orsi and Giovanni Battista Amendola (1848–87).

Favourite subjects were portraits and, in typically Romantic fashion, historical characters with heavy revolutionary overtones, such as Spartacus by Vincenzo Vela (1820-91).
A more dramatic change of direction occurred through the Neapolitan Vincenzo Gemito (1852-1929), who dared to leave smoothness aside and concentrated on movement.
Mario Rutelli (1859-1941) developed a naturalistic and lively style, taking inspiration from Hellenistic sculpture and specializing in bronze figures for fountains and equestrian monuments, which have since become famous Roman landmarks (the Fontana delle Naiadi in Piazza della Repubblica and Anita Garibaldi, on the Janiculum Hill, for example).
