Vinyl roof - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vinyl roofs were most popular in the American market, and they are considered one of the period hallmarks of 1970s Detroit cars.
Vinyl roofs were also very popular on European- (especially UK-) and Japanese-built cars during the 1970s, and tended to be applied to sporting or luxury trim versions of standard saloon (sedan) models by pretty much the whole gamut of manufacturers.
Probably the first modern vinyl roof as it would later be accepted, though, appeared as an option on the 1961 Ford Thunderbird, a car which also re-introduced landau bars as a styling touch.

 Vinyl Roofing
Vinyl roofs are typically white, grey or tan, and hence tend to reflect heat away from building rooftops and reduce the amount of heat that enters a building.
Vinyl roofing membranes can be designed to resist wind uplift, structural movement and harsh outdoor elements; in addition, vinyl's inherent durability and the strong reinforcement fabric used in such membranes further enhances vinyl's performance.
Vinyl roofing systems are subjected to a battery of tests designed to measure thickness of the membrane, tensile strength, water absorption, thermal stability, seam strength and other performance criteria.

The Vinyl Institute - News Center - Reflective Vinyl Roofs Save Energy
Measured at the plenum between the roof and the ceiling, average temperatures were reduced from 101° F to 95° F. Scientists concluded that installation of the white vinyl roof would save the building’s owners about 63 megawatt hours of energy consumption per year, with annual energy- and peak-demand savings of about $7,200.
In addition, vinyl roofing membranes have a documented performance track record that exceeds 30 years, and are inherently fire resistant, exceeding current standards and providing an extra measure of safety over the alternatives.
Finally, vinyl roofing membranes can also be found as a component in "green roofs," which consist of a multi-layer soil and drainage system upon which vegetation can grow on urban roofs.

During discussions with a contractor, Pacific Rainier Roofing, also of Seattle, the architects discovered that vinyl - unlike EPDM - was available in the right custom color that complemented the aluminum used in the museum design.
