The album is full of hits like the legendary Enjoy the Silence and Policy Of Truth but the al;bum after all this still does have some album filler tedious b-sides like Blue Dress.
The album is full of soulful and thoughtful ballads and is timeless especially when you think what bands like U2 were doing at the same time.
"Violator" was released in the Spring of 1990 at the height of the band's popularity, and in my opinion, maturity-wise it's an artistic parallel of The Cure's 1989 "Disintegration", and New Order's "Technique" albums.

this is one of those albums that if you heard it back when it came out in 1999, you would have thought it was pretty decent, but the more you listen to it, the more you realize that it's at best an average album, and that's being optimistic.

The Album might not have the unifying flow as an album by a single artist or group, but that is not what it is about anyways.

As a management company, Violator must be really succesful, since some of their customers are real cash cows: Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, Big Punisher.
Mysonne’s rhyme on "Violator" is just a short summary for that "bringing guns, weed and coke to connected towns / see I pop niggas like corn, and real killers do killings wit the lights on / I knock ‘em out, cause I don't like to fight long".
Compared to other thug releases, this might have it’s qualities, but for the people that want to hear something, that goes beyond the money, the hoes, the drugs and the gats, their eyes will be violated by this compilation.

When Exciter was declared the best Depeche Mode album since Violator, those who said so must have also forgotten about Songs of Faith and Devotion, in addition to having found a roundabout way of saying that it was merely better than Ultra.
It takes the best qualities from those releases, combines them with a few subtle allusions to Violator -- tiptoeing the border that separates retread from reinvention -- and makes for a highly concentrated set of songs that all but demand to be heard in one uninterrupted shot.
Though none of them vie to be the album's centerpiece, it's apparent that the move wasn't a concession of desperation on anyone's part.

The second Volume in the Violator series seemed primed to follow in the footsteps of the original album with the first single "What It Is" by Bustah Rhymes being such a classic.
This album fails miserably to compare to the original Violator album, but even with that being the case.
The album isn't solid all the way through, and has about 4 tracks out of 17 that are actually worth listening to.

Their albums were always a bit inconsistent, so this is a godsend for those who don't want to shell out for 5 albums.
This album was indeed a departure from their last album, Violator, but this is not a bad thing.
Depeche Mode released this live album of their 101st concert of the Music for the Masses tour to coincide with a concert movie of the same name.

Ultra is the album that made me revisit Depeche Mode after a hiatus of more than 10 years not listening to their music AT ALL.
Why expect a Violator clone from a band that has always succeeded in sounding different with each album?I can understand if people don't like the particular direction taken by the guys here, but let's not destroy the album "because it is no Violator".

Then moving Violator as a label back into the fold as Lyor grew as a label executive with RAL (Rush Associated Labels).

On 'Violator', the production is very consistent between songs to the point of 'Personal Jesus' employing a treated snare from 'World In My Eyes' and the Kraftwerkesque "pewt" noise liberally sprinkled among several of the tracks.
F. Kervorkian mixed all the 'Violator' album but for 'Enjoy The Silence' you preferred to release the Miller/ Flood and Miller / Legg mixes.
I've heard many DM fans say (after your departure) "....the songwriter and the singer are still there so the next albums will be as good as the previous ones..." but what I miss on the 'Ultra' album is the basslines which I think have been the trademark of DM.

With some of the biggest names in the industry laying down tracks for this undertaking, it was inconceivable that this album could be anything other than amazing.
With this album, the only ones being “violated” were the fans who paid their hard-earned money to purchase it.

This is one of those rare albums with no fillers; every song is superbly crafted - a mix of commercial electronic pop that is synonymous with Depeche Mode, hand in hand with the deeper material that the more hardened fan is familiar with.
If I was to recommend to just one DM album for the casual listener to anyone new to the band, then "Violator" would be that album.
This is the album that made DM a global phenomenon and a force to be reckoned with.

Hailed as a change in direction in the group's sound, this 1990 album from Depeche Mode introduced one new element: guitars, or at least better-than-usual samples thereof, in addition to the usual wall of synths and samples.
But aside from what instruments were being used, this was a big shift in another way, one that I liked - an emphasis on melody and decent songwriting rather than production techniques and pushing the limits of synths and samples for their own sake.
And finally, the album's last track, Clean, truly becomes an exercise in irony in hindsight, when one considers that lead singer Gahan later went on to attempt suicide and enter drug rehab.

I am also one of the freaks who loved exciter and ultra...however, I will admit that they were missing elements from previous DM albums, most notably, the 'industrial lite' sound that Alan brought to the group...however, their strengths were that the songs were far more complex than previous albums.
Their very best album for me was Songs of Faith and Devotion (loud and exciting)- but this new album comes VERY close.
I am now convinced that with this album we are truly in the presence of greatness, possibly unmatched by any other artist in the last few years and almost unheard of for a band 25 years into their career.
