While this album isn't completely awful, it certainly doesn't change my opinion that the only Violent Femmes albums anyone needs to own are their first album and "Add It Up (1981-1993)," the Femmes best-of album.

In commemoration of its 20th Anniversary (it was recorded in July of 1982), Slash/Rhino have reissued the Violent Femmes' debut album.
Almost ten years later, when I was entering the 7th grade, I had had this album burned into my memory by my older sister (she was a senior in high school at the time).
But, the great liner notes (written by Michael Azerrad!) which include a song-by-song commentary on the original album by the band (which is very amusing) and the 10 great pop songs that comprise the album still outweigh the extraneous material.

Somehow, the Femmes have kept the same youthful ardor, pain, and humor that defined their debut: their playing is just as manic, and Gano's voice has the same exact warble, which simultaneously hints at frailty, self-deprecation, and passion.
At spots the Femmes have maintained the same joy and desperation heard in their earlier work, such as in "Rejoice and Be Happy", a raucous romp of a song, which takes as its inspiration a few verses from the Gospel of Matthew, perhaps reflecting Gano's earnest Christianity.

The self titled album more than any of the Femmes other work really offers solace to any teen (or any other age) male during a painful break up.

Although I’m guessing they didn’t realize it at the time, the Violent Femmes’ debut essentially relegated the band to a special kind of hell if only because it was completely impossible to follow up.
The Violent Femmes are a very good band whose career was unfortunately somewhat hamstrung by the long shadow of their first record.

I got to meet 2 of the 3 Femmes as well as some others who were associated with the band, I got all 3 member's signatures to work into my tattoo that Puppet is doing, & I snapped some nice pictures with my Razr phone (since they wouldn't let me take in my digital camera).
The Femmes put on a kick ass show so you know I'll be there the next time they're in Texas and I'm not going to EVER forget Thursday May 18th 2006 EVER.
