Violin concerto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In some violin concertos, especially from the Baroque and modern eras, the violin (or group of violins) is accompanied by a chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra—for instance, Vivaldi's L'estro armonico, originally scored for four violins, two violas, cello, and continuo, and Allan Pettersson's first concerto, for violin and string quartet.

Viola Concerto (Walton) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Viola Concerto by William Walton was written in 1929 for the famous violist Lionel Tertis.
The concerto was modelled on Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto, which Walton admired.
Many soloists better known for their violin playing have also recorded the concerto, including Nigel Kennedy, Maxim Vengerov, and Yehudi Menuhin.

Walton: Articles: Walton's Violin and Viola Concertos, by Ian Lace
Walton wrote three concertos for string instruments: the Viola Concerto (1929), the Violin Concerto (1939) and the Cello Concerto (1957).
In 1962 Walton gave the orchestration a major overhaul, using double (rather than triple) woodwind, eliminating one trumpet and the tuba, and adding a harp." Michael Kennedy has written that "the unobtrusive dramatic presence which Tovey discerned may well be attributed to the existence of an undisclosed emotional programme.
A marvellous woman" Christopher Palmer writes, "Walton was blissfully in love as he worked on the concerto through the late 1930s and it is tempting to relate the solo violin's expression of radiant happiness to its unrivalled capacity for free-ranging lyricism for what someone once called instrumental bel canto.

 Walton Violin Concerto
Rather, it is wrapped in an intensely personal realm; its narrative a love story that finally unfolds in an accompanied cadenza near the end of the work; the same device used so memorably by Elgar in his violin concerto.
Having been presented, it is steadily ratcheted up in intensity until, beside itself with longing, the violin is finally submerged in the first sobbing tutti.
When, towards the end of the movement, the opening idea is recapitulated, Walton gives it first to the flute while the solo violin consoles itself with the counter meloday first heard under the main theme at the beginning.

Samuel Barber and William Walton - Violin Concertos - A Good-Music-Guide Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
He had already achieved recognition with some small-scale orchestral works, but a violin concerto, that most romantic of forms, was to be his big success.
Walton was the decadent man of leisure, a university dropout, living on the patronage of the Sitwell family, and basking in the glory that his Belshazzar's Feast had brought him.
And like Barber's Concerto, the Violin Concerto in B minor by Walton has a beautiful floating quality, but not without complex rhythms and great demands on the soloist.

To understand the beauty of a violin you must first embrace the sadness of a tear, the beauty of a pretty woman, love, anger, jealousy, sorrow, joy, pain and all the other emotions that go with being a human being, falling in love, and being at one with your emotions.
I am a violist, and the Primrose recording of the Walton Concerto is my least favorite; his sound is harsh and ugly to me, and-- in my opinion-- not at all congenial to the flowing, sumptuous style of the piece.

In Daniel's hands, Walton's Cello Concerto's opening Moderato is very poetic with the strings singing their lovely melody with infinite tenderness.
Daniel delivers a poised and controlled, well-integrated performance of the Cello Concerto and the partnership between cello and orchestra is particularly close and mutually sustaining.

A choirmaster’s son, Walton became a chorister at Christ Church Cathedral School, Oxford (1912), and seemed set fair for a conventional choral career.
When Walton, having failed his exams, bemoaned his fate, the Sitwell siblings’ solution was to “adopt” him, organising an income so that their “pet genius” could compose in comfort.
Numerous gratuitous virtuoso flurries possibly explain Walton’s wry comment on recovering the lost score, “A pity it was ever found, really.” Speak for yourself, Mr.

Britten's Violin Concerto, written in 1938 was premiered during the World War II, while Walton's Viola Concerto was composed ten years earlier, but both works are deeply expressive in their different ways.

The Walton is far more controversial, for though, as in Britten, Vengerov brings out the fun of the brilliant bravura passages, the outer movements are taken far more slowly than is usual.
But with Rostropovich encouraging him, he totally changes the character of the finale with his extremely slow speed, so that its jaunty main theme sounds like a cakewalk from Façade, while the tender recollections of the epilogue are hypnotically dreamlike.
