  Johannes Brahms - Violin Concerto
His Violin Concerto, Double Concerto for violin and cello, and three violin sonatas were all created for the very same man, Joseph Joachim, Brahms' recital partner, musical advisor, and friend for all of their adult lives.
Brahms had begun his professional career in the 1850s as a piano accompanist to better-known artists, particularly violinists, such as Joachim.
The two men had performed together for decades, and Brahms certainly knew the impressive extent of his colleague's talent, but not being a violinist himself, the composer was concerned about the practicality of what he was creating.

Johannes Brahms - Concerto for Violin
Brahms composed this, his only violin concerto in the summer of 1878, and it was first performed at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, on January 1, 1879, with the composer conducting.
Brahms incorporated several of Joachim's suggestions into the final version of the score, and rather than providing a cadenza for the first movement, he used one written by Joachim.
Brahms also makes several subtle references to Beethoven's violin concerto, which is also in D Major.

Brahms & Stravinsky Violin Concertos - Hilary Hahn - sonyclassical
Brahms had drafted a second violin concerto, but in time he became so discouraged by the reception accorded his first that he tossed the new one into the fire and never attempted another.
Shortly after Brahms’s death in 1897, however, his violin concerto was taken up by a new generation of players – among them Fritz Kreisler, Maud Powell, Bronislaw Huberman, and Efrem Zimbalist – and their performances helped the public to hear the concerto with new ears.
By World War I, the Brahms violin concerto was already being ranked alongside the Beethoven (which it resembles in length, structure, and proportions) as one of the two greatest concerti ever written for the violin, and time has not altered that assessment.

Brahms was not a very religious man, in fact he started his career as a whorehouse pianist at the Hamburg docks.
It's a four MMT concerto and was FP on Nov 9, 1881 with Brahms as soloist.
He worked on this concerto during the summer of 1878 in a Austrian village where he had previously composed the lyrical Second Symphony and where in the following summer he was to compose the G major violin sonata.

[Brahms - Violin Concerto] notes by Paul Serotsky   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Brahms' compositions prompted Joachim to introduce him to Liszt and Schumann, and by 1856, as Princesse Frederike's piano tutor, Brahms had a cushy job leaving lots of time for composition.
Following the First Piano Concerto (1859), German Requiem (1868), and Symphonies 1 and 2 (1876/7), the Violin Concerto (1878) was written for, with the invaluable advice of, and (probably) inspired by Joachim, who furnished the sympathetic cadenza.
Brahms, having tried “symphonising” the form with his First Piano Concerto and poised to succeed gloriously with the Second (1881), planned the Violin Concerto in four movements.

Oehmsclassics: Schmid, Benjamin - Goldmark: Violin Concerto · Brahms: Double Concerto
The Concerto was written between 1875 and 1878, at almost one and the same time as concerti by Brahms and Tchaikovsky (premiered respectively one and three years later), a fact that doubtless affected the fate of Goldmark’s Concerto.
Here, however, the scheme of Piano Concerto No. 1 and the Violin Concerto is largely repeated: from the dramatically intense and the most symphonic first movement (Allegro) through the strophic, ballade-form of the meditative Andante to the temperamental genre finale (Vivace non troppo), as always with Brahms permeated with Hungarian gypsy accents.
What was new with the Double Concerto was arguably its great severity of form and objectiveness of tone: not by mere chance did the ageing genius (the Concerto marked the start of what would be the last ten years of his life) turn to the devices and style of the concerto grosso.

Brahms began the Second Concerto in 1878 under the inspiration of an Italian vacation.
The work was soon set aside in favor of a violin concerto, and Brahms did not take it up again until another Italian visit three years later.
It is evidence not only of the magnificence of this new piece, but also of how far Brahms had come in the public consciousness, for this work, less stormy yet no less ambitious than its predecessor, benefited from being the effort of a household name.

 Brahms: Violin Concerto
In 1848 the 15-year-old Johannes Brahms, on tour as accompanist to the Hungarian violinist Eduard Reményi, was introduced to Joseph Joachim, a talented fiddler two years his senior.
It was only natural that Brahms should wish to write a concerto for his friend, but 30 years would elapse before he could muster the confidence to do so.
But Brahms continued to have doubts, and soon had discarded the middle two of the original four movements, replacing them with what the eternal jokester termed ``a feeble Adagio.'' Joachim saw through his old friend's self-deprecation and wasted no time in presenting the new work to the public.

Linn Records - Brahms Violin Concerto and Hungarian Dances
Brahms declined to write a cadenza for the movement leaving this task to Joachim instead.
Each of the three movements of the Concerto reveals a different dimension of Brahms’s multi-faceted compositional persona, and if the first movement epitomises Brahms the symphonist, it is Brahms the song composer who emerges in the lyrical second movement.
Brahms largely avoided the Verbunkos, however, and the contrapuntal textures and harmonies characteristic of his own style are much more prominent.

The reason that Tchaikovsky's concerto was not premiered for three years after its completion is simple: Leopold Auer, the most noted virtuoso of the time, for whom it was written, refused to attempt it.
Tchaikovsky's concerto is indisputably one of the two or three greatest orchestral work for violin in the nineteenth-century canon.
As Charles O'Connell noted, the purpose of this concerto was to "exploit -- in and against a setting of voluptuous orchestral splendor -- the ultimate tonal and technical resources of the violin." As he concludes, it succeeds, and Heifetz and the CSO succeed as well.

A big symphonic concerto like the Brahms might seem an odd choice for a chamber orchestra, but the string section of the SCO is so good and full-sounding that it has to be the most impressive aspect of this CD.
It's a brave move, too, to undertake this difficult concerto with the soloist as conductor, but Joseph Swensen is highly accomplished in both fields and no matter how much rubato he uses (and he doesn't make it easy for them) the SCO stick to him like glue.
You'd expect the concerto to be the highlight of this CD, but it's actually the Hungarian Dances which steal the show in terms of virtuosity and balance.
