Violin Concerto (Tchaikovsky) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tchaikovsky was accompanied there by his composition pupil, the violinist Yosif Kotek, and the two played works for violin and piano together, which may have been the catalyst for the composition of the concerto.
Tchaikovsky not being a violinist himself, he was advised on the composition of the solo part by Kotek.
Tchaikovsky wrote only one concerto for violin, but wrote three other concerti, all for piano, with the Piano Concerto No. 1 by far the best known.

Violin concerto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A violin concerto is a concerto for solo violin (occasionally, two or more violins) and instrumental ensemble, customarily orchestra.
In some violin concertos, especially from the Baroque and modern eras, the violin (or group of violins) is accompanied by a chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra—for instance, Vivaldi's L'estro armonico, originally scored for four violins, two violas, cello, and continuo, and Allan Pettersson's first concerto, for violin and string quartet.

Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35 (Part I)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), is considered to be the greatest Romantic Period composer.
Tchaikovsky began writing his violin concerto in 1878.
Tchaikovsky was unaware of the physical limitations of the instrument, so his former student/friend, Yosif Yosifovich, provided technical advice for the concerto.

 Piotr Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto
The composer was intensely fond of the young man, and immediately set aside the sonata to begin work on a violin concerto that could serve the dual purpose of celebrating Kotek's skill while also giving Tchaikovksy an outlet for his feelings.
Thus, Tchaikovsky chose to dedicate the work to the renowned soloist Leopold Auer, only to find, to his horror, that Auer refused to perform the piece, rejecting it as "unviolinistic." A premiere scheduled for March 1879 had to be cancelled for lack of a soloist.
Even that troublesome violinist, Leopold Auer, came to praise Tchaikovsky, confessing in the final year of the composer's life, that he had misjudged the Concerto and belatedly adding it to his repertoire.

Concerto in D for Violin and Orchestra, Op.35.
On July 18th, 1877, Tchaikovsky made perhaps the biggest mistake of his life when he married Antonini Ivanova Milioukov, a somewhat unstable former pupil who had decided she was hopelessly in love with him.
In subsequent years he and others championed it throughout the world, and today it is, with good reason, one of the most loved violin concertos ever written.

The Schumann and the Wieniawski concertos are the sleepers in this collation, with Ashkenazy's taking the uncut version of the orchestral score in the latter, so the scale of the piece gains, where the Heifetz version eviscerated all but the virtuoso's part.
The Schumann Concerto - championed by Kulenkampff, Menuhin, and Szeryng - is a baroque exercise in singularity of affect, since all of the musical material derives from one cloth in spite of an attempt to make a third-movement polonaise out of its gloomy character.
The big concertos, those by Tchaikovsky and Brahms, enjoy the sonic luster that the Cleveland Orchestra can project when it is wound tight by virtuoso conductors.

 Tchaikovsky's violin concerto
However, after Tchaikovsky left and Auer had the time to look the piece over, he decided it was in need of revision because it was unsuited for the nature of the violin.
For some time, there was talk of the concerto as being unplayable, until a young Russian violinist named Adolf Brodsky took it up and premiered it on December 4 1881, with the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra.
The critics came down very hard on Tchaikovsky, stating that he called for the violin to be “beaten fl and blue,” and yanked and torn about.

I'm not a particular fan of the Tchaikovsky concerto (I really got this for the Korngold) but this is a very fine interpretation: high quality playing from the soloist with plenty of imaginative touches.
Mutter's violin is also slightly too closely observed, which makes me deduct a star for sonics - but generally the sound is very pleasing.
Booklet notes contain a great deal of Mutter/Previn ruminating on why "more corn than gold" Korngold never received the recognition he deserves, after which Previn crowns Mutter as the interpretive queen of the Korngold Violin concerto, an honor other professional violinists might be happy to concede and hardly befitting or reflective of Mutter's true skills.
