Violin concerto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A violin concerto is a concerto for solo violin (occasionally, two or more violins) and instrumental ensemble, customarily orchestra.
In some violin concertos, especially from the Baroque and modern eras, the violin (or group of violins) is accompanied by a chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra—for instance, Vivaldi's L'estro armonico, originally scored for four violins, two violas, cello, and continuo, and Allan Pettersson's first concerto, for violin and string quartet.

April 20, 1997 - Andrews University Orchestra Concert
Bach composed his violin concertos between 1717 and 1723 during the time that he was director of music at the court of Cöthen.
Bach's concertos, unlike most concertos of later time, are not primarily virtuosic pieces for soloists, but rather feature the interplay between soloist and tutti (the full ensemble).
The concerto in E major, of which we hear the first movement tonight, is scored for solo violin, strings, and continuo.

Bach wrote two concertos for solo violin and orchestra, one in a minor, and this one, in E major.
Bach wrote several concertos in both Weimar and Cöthen, including some harpsichord concertos, and it is possible that he wrote even more concertos for solo violin, though only these two survive.

Johann Sebastian Bach - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bach drew the soprano and alto choristers from the School, and the tenors and basses from the School and elsewhere in Leipzig.
Bach was best known during his lifetime as an organist, organ consultant, and composer of organ works both in the traditional German free genres such as preludes, fantasias, and toccatas, and stricter forms such as chorale preludes and fugues.
Bach's other large work, the Mass in B minor, was assembled by Bach near the end of his life, mostly from pieces composed earlier (such as Cantata 191 and Cantata 12).

Los Angeles Philharmonic Association - Piece Detail
The Concerto was an adaptation of the Violin Concerto in E major, BWV 1042, which Bach wrote sometime before 1730, in all likelihood during his time as Kapellmeister in Cöthen (1717-23).
In the A section, Bach introduces the essential thematic material of the movement, and he treats this to a series of elaborate variations in the extended B section, which basically functions as a development would in sonata form.
Here, Bach alternates between the rondo theme and contrasting episodes in a compact, fleet, and gracious movement that prefigures the finales of many of the great piano concertos of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Keyboard Concerto No. 3 in D major, BWV 1054
Bach composed all seven of his solo keyboard concertos (originally for harpsichord, of course) in Leipzig during the 1730s, at which time he also made a start on an eighth, with winds as well as strings in his orchestra.
Most of his subsequent keyboard concertos are similar transcriptions of those violin concertos; some of the originals are clearly identified, others lost, and some of the latter are assumed to have been for oboe or oboe d’amore rather than violin.
In addition to his solo concertos, those for two and three harpsichords, also composed in Leipzig, are transcriptions of his earlier ones for violins (or in one instance for violin and oboe) and his Concerto in A minor for four keyboard instruments, BWV 1065, was transcribed from a four-violin concerto in B minor by Vivaldi.

Notes on Violin Concerto in E major, BWV 1042 (1717)
In these polyphonic landmarks of the violin repertoire, Bach demonstrates his familiarity with the effects that can be attained on the violin, often skirting the edge of the possible.
However, of those that remain, Bach’s first biographer, Forkel, wrote that “One can never say enough of their beauty.” Among the violin works composed at Köthen that survive are: The E-major Violin concerto (1717), the Double concerto for two violins, and a concerto for violin and oboe.
Such is the case with Keyboard Concerto #3 (BWV 1054), which is simply a transcription of the violin concerto in E major, BWV 1042.

While the concertos to be heard on this disc were in all probability prepared specifically for the Collegium concerts, derived from earlier, mostly Cöthen-composed material, the first concerto, however, offers a more devious lineage.
Bach's Harpsichord Concerto BWV 1053 was derived from two of his cantatas.
Of the next three concertos, BWV 1054, 55 and 56, the first is a transcription by Bach of his Violin Concerto in E Major BWV 1042, and it may be supposed that the other two are also transcriptions of Cöthen works, most probably lost violin concertos.

Maybe the D minor concerto in its violin guise — much better known in its keyboard form — can drag a little, and I certainly felt it did in the Largo but there is real eloquence in the Andante of the G minor transcribed from the Harpsichord Concerto.

Concert to showcase classical core - The Boston Globe
The first half of the program consists of J.S. Bach's Violin Concerto in E Major, a baroque landmark from around 1720, and Schubert's Symphony No. 2, which was written nearly a century later and bridges the classical and romantic eras.
Buswell said he has sometimes been identified with Bach's music, having performed, conducted, and lectured on the topic, and hosted the 1990 documentary ''The Stations of Bach." He also has carved out a healthy niche in 20th-century music, performing world premieres of composers ranging from Gian Carlo Menotti to Ned Rorem and Gunther Schuller.
Buswell received a 2003 Grammy nomination for his recording of Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto, and is on the faculty of Gordon College in Wenham and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
