 Newswise
A University of Arkansas researcher and his colleagues used tree ring records to accurately date the wood used in a famous violin purported to be made by Stradivarius and showed that the wood was hewn during the violin maker's lifetime.
The violin in question bears the name Messiah and is believed to be one of the instruments made by the famous violin maker Antonio Stradivarius.
The controversy over the violin's origin escalated as a British violin maker and tree ring researcher dated the instrument to the 1680s, while a German tree ring expert put the date in the late 1730s -- too late to be an authentic Stradivarius.

Violin Online - Choosing a Violin
Key factors in choosing a violin are to use a reputable dealer, music store or violin maker to purchase or rent the violin, and to have a violinist play the violin to help determine if it has a good tone.
Violins are available in many sizes, and a knowledgeable violin maker, music dealer or violin teacher will be able to help you find the right size for you or your child.
As a general sizing guideline, when you hold the violin (placing the chin rest under your left jaw), you should be able to extend your left arm under the violin and be able to curve the tips of your left fingers around the end of the scroll, including a slight bend in your left elbow.

The set of bridges, used to hold the strings up from the body of the violin, was made up entirely from pieces by the famous French maker Aubert: the majority the ‘deluxe’ model, made of best aged wood and treated with the workshop’s unique treatment.
Like all stringed instrument accessories the bridge is a vital part of the set-up of a violin and the high price reflected the increasing scarcity of good, aged wood available to makers and restorers.
Other sets of bridges, along with some lots of aged wood used for repairing stringed instruments, went for considerably over their estimates although none reached the heights of the set by Aubert, whose new bridges can have up to a two-year wait and whose old examples are particularly hard to find.

Violin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is the smallest and highest-pitched member of the violin family of string instruments, which also includes the viola, cello, and double bass, aka string bass.
A violin is sometimes informally called a fiddle, a term originating from the instrument's use in folk music, but sometimes used regardless of the music played on it.
Most likely the first makers of violins borrowed from three types of current instruments: the rebec, in use since the 10th century (itself derived from the Arabic rebab), the Renaissance fiddle, and the lira da braccio.

 Violin Maker
From a fragmented biography of the famously eccentric Canadian pianist, Girard has moved to The Red Violin (opening Friday), which follows a hand-crafted instrument through three centuries and across five countries, leaving both inspiration and destruction in its wake.
Gould, Girard points out, was as a Canadian "obsessed with the immensity of the country, the notion of the unreachable north." So too the red violin remains sought after but unattainable for much of the new film, and those who, briefly, do possess it find it does not bring what they expected.
Set at an auction house where the world’s priciest instruments are being sold to the highest bidder, the story might seem more logically set in New York or London, both of which were considered, but Girard says the story only clicked when he moved the action to Montréal.

Master Violin Maker Gliga and his Best Sounding Maestro Violins
There is a subtle relationship between a master violin, the tree that provided the wood used to make it, the climatic and atmospheric conditions that existed during the tree's lifetime, as well as the soil's chemical composition where the tree grew.
The master violin makers recognize these trees by their perfect rectitude, their fine thin crust, and lack of any resin run-offs.
The master violin maker knows that narrow annual rings would not only strengthen the violin but would increase the wood's density, which will make a big difference in the violin's tone and brilliance and create a superior tonal quality.
