Sir Edward Elgar - Violoncello Concerto in E minor, Op.85
Elgar wrote his ‘Cello Concerto in the summer of 1919, and it was to be his last major orchestral work.
The concerto is widely recognized as a deeply emotional masterpiece, and has even outstripped the first "Pomp and Circumstance" march in popularity.
As befits its meditative character, the concerto largely dispenses with rigorous musical forms, and each movement except the third is introduced by an expressive recitative for the solo ‘cello.

Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, Op 107 Dmitri Shostakovich
What's most striking about the concerto - in addition to the depth of expression of the solo part and its technical demands - is the almost incessant driving, rhythmic character of the orchestral accompaniment, which is most clearly heard in the first movement and the finale.
The word "concerto" is known to derive from two roots with apparent opposite meanings.

The composer's inspiration soared, and in October of that year he was already working on the score of the Concerto in A minor for violoncello and orchestra, later published under the opus number 129.
Soon after completing the violoncello concerto and the symphony, he began to complain about nervous exhaustion and pains that were possibly of a psychosomatic nature.
The violoncello concerto was not given its first performance until June 9, 1860 - about ten years after its completion and four years after Schumann's death.

Jaffe’s Cello Concerto showcases the versatility and lyricism of the cello, and at the same time requires of the cellist a complete technical command of the instrument.

Christopher Rouse - Composer - Violoncello Concerto
During the long gestation and composition of the concerto, the music world lost a number of significant creative figures, several of whom were personal friends.
As a result, my violoncello concerto became a meditation upon death -- the struggle to deny it and its ultimate inevitability.
I elected once again to use the two-movement form that I had employed in my violin concerto of 1991, although the slow-fast movement order of that earlier score was here reversed.

 Cellists of the Viennese School
The development of the art of the violoncello in Vienna in the first half of the last century was encouraged by the general ferment in the musical life of the Austrian capital in the post-Napoleonic period.
One can talk of the Viennese violoncello school as an organic trend only symbolically since the Austrian capital was a haven for representatives of different national schools (such as the Czech) and the "teacher-pupil" links were not as distinct and consistent as with the Dresden school.

Boismortier, Corrette, and Le Phenix   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
The concerto, developed in Italy in the late 17th- and early 18thcenturies by Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713), Giuseppe Torelli (1658-1709), and Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1750), and brought to fruition by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), did not appear as a genre in France until the late 1720s.
The violoncello is listed first and it is apparent that these works were originally conceived with a stringed instrument in mind since stopped chords (double, triple, and quadruple) are included.
The quadruple "Concerto" in E minor is similar to Boismortier's pathbreaking chamber concertos, the quintuple flute concertos.

Familiar to Festival audiences, Christopher Rouse is one of America's most successful composers of orchestral music.
Winner of the 1993 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his Trombone Concerto (which received it's West Coast Premiere here at Cabrillo Music Festival), Rouse has created a body of work perhaps unequalled in its emotional intensity.
Among these are Violin Concerto (1991), commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival for Cho-Liang Lin, and Violoncello Concerto, given its premiere in Spring 1994 by Yo-Yo Ma, with David Zinman leading the Lost Angeles Philharmonic.
