Topic: Violotta

Alfred Stelzner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two instruments of his invention were the violotta and cellone.
The violotta is tuned an octave below the violin, and possesses a timbre between that of the viola and cello.
The cellone, a large cello, is tuned between the cello and string bass.

Felix Draeseke Quintet in A major for 2 Violins, Viola, Violotta and Cello, WoO 25, with original Stelzner instruments   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Why Draeseke became interested in the Stelzner's violotta is explained partially by the fact that in May, 1896 the Dresden Conservatory sponsored a prize competition with the intent of giving Stelzner's instruments, particularly the violotta and cellone, some validity.
It was played a number of times after Draeseke's death, but usually with normal instruments and a second cello being substituted for the violotta, a tradition based on the fact that Draeseke uses the tenor clef in his notation of the violotta in his manuscript score and parts.

ARNOLD KRUG: Sextet in D Major for Two Violins, Viola, Violotta, Cello and Cellone, Op. 68
While it seems reasonable that Felix Draeseke, as a member of the conservatory faculty, had some role in final decisions about prize winners, his work was neither written for nor submitted to the competition.
The only other known work published with Stelzner instruments in mind, is a Sextet in F major excluding the cellone in favor of a contrabass though otherwise for the same combination as that by Behm and Krug, written for the competition and submitted by the Austrian composer Theodor Streicher (1874-1940).
It is also evident in this instance that he appreciated the sound of the instruments for which he was writing, for there are moments in the sextet of almost eerie contrivance, unimaginable without the singular timbres of violotta and cellone (and, one must conclude, lost without them).

Last summer, the Christensens bought a Stelzner violin and violotta, and had another violin and viola made to Stelzner's specifications.
Stelzner's instruments were well enough received in the 1890s that German composer Felix Draeseke, at the Dresden Conservatory, wrote a quintet specifically for them.

In 1896, the Dresden Conservatory organized a competition intended to stimulate interest for the newly designed and developed members of the string family by Stelzner.
