The winegrowers of the Vipava Winery have devoted special effort to reestablishing the old autochthonous white wines of the area, Zelen and Pinela.
Aged and new oak barrels are used in the traditional cellar in the center of Vipava where most of their red wines originate, including barrique wines.
Vipava Merlot from this and other sites is a particularly suitable wine for barrique processing: Vipava Merlot Barrique has a particularly intense, almost aggressive flavour.

Vipava s povodjem ** The Upper Vipava Valley lies in the westernpart of Slovenia, on the transition from the Friuli lowlands (Furlanska nizina) to central Slovenia.
From east to west, it is surrounded by the plateaux of Nanos, Hruzica and Trnovski gozd; the Vipava Hills in the south separate it from the Karst.

he Vipava Valley lies between the high Trnovska plateau and the low karst region, a separating depression between the high northern karst plateaus and the classic karst region; in the mid-Tertiary period the valley was filled in with flysch (marl, loess, and breccia in alteration).

 Ajdovscina
Ajdovscina is an administrative centre of Vipava valley since the beginning of this century replacing in this role the older Vipavski kriz [kri*z] (Cross of Vipava).
Although Vipava valley on south borders on the rocky karst it lies on one of the most soils in Slovenia.
The grapes from the vineyards are in the autumn taken to the vine cellars in the close by Vipava.

The highway extension Vipava - Selo, an 11.5-kilometer section of the Razdrto - Nova Gorica motorway, opened to traffic on Monday, 25 October.
It will improve the connection of the western region of Gorisko with that of central Slovenia and the port city of Koper, with economic integration to central Slovenia and a connection for communities within the Vipava valley.
The new highway will help in the lowering of traffic on the present main road and relieve the burden of those communities on the main road.

The valley of Vipava is perhaps best known for its wineyards and wine-making tradition.
In this area rare autochthonous grape sorts Zelen and Pinela are grown, along with more international white ones like Sauvignon, Beli pinot (Pinot blanc), Chardonnay, Rebula, or red ones like Merlot (also cultivated in barique), Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera.
However, the steep rocks overlooking the town of Vipava, in midst of the lush Mediterranean vegetation, provide also some thrill of adventure for a climbing newcomer.

The Counts Lanthieri ruled over the Vipava Valley from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, establishing the extensive vineyards for which the valley is known.
The counts also left their architectural stamp with the construction of a town palace at their seat in Vipava.
Originally built in 1669, the palace went through a series of renovations, culminating in its present baroque appearance in 1762, reminiscent of the villas of the Veneto, a reflection of the family’s Longobard origins.
