Virgil was reported as being killed and his wife and daughter moved away and eventually remarried in Walla Walla.
Virgil Earp married Alice Sullivan in 1870 and for a time ran a sawmill in Prescott.
He pleaded for Virgil Earp not to get involved in a shoot-out but he was brushed aside as the four men carried on walking towards the OK Corral.

Besides serving as Tombstone's city marshal, Virgil Earp went on to serve as the first constable, and subsequent city marshal for the newly created town, and later city of Colton, California.
Virgil was recuperating from both an injury sustained at the O.K. Corral shootout and a later attempt on his life, which left his left arm useless.
His chapter on Virgil's career in Colton offers an important insight into pioneer law enforcement in one of Southern California boomtowns during the 1880s, placing it in the larger context of the shifting frontier that was the American West.

The defendants were officers charged with the duty of arresting and disarming brave and determined men who were experts in the use of firearms, as quick as thought and certain as death, and who had previously declared their intentions not to be arrested or disarmed.
It does not appear to have been a wanton slaughter of unresisting and unarmed innocents, who were yielding, graceful submission to the officers of the law, or surrendering to, or fleeing from their assailants, but armed and defiant men, accepting the wager of battle and succumbing only in death.
