Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Virgil Exner was adopted by George W. and Iva Exner as a baby.
From a young age, Exner was jeered at by his fellow elementary school mates due to the fact that his ears potruded from his head at odd angle, a factor that lead to his designs of the 1962 small Dodge and Plymounts.

Unfortunately, Virgil Exner had a heart attack in 1956 (when the 1961 cars were being designed) – and the 1961 car did not have enough of his direction.

Virgil Exner, Chrysler Corporation's first vice-president of styling, once characterized automobile design as "art made practical." Automobile enthusiast and consummate artist, "Exner," recalls a former associate, "had an intuitive sense of body form.
In 1949, Exner joined Chrysler as head of advanced styling, where he was soon responsible for a spate of creative "idea cars"--the K-310, the Chrysler d'Elegance, De Soto Adventurer, Dodge Firearrow, and many others, all handcrafted by Ghia coachbuilders in Italy.
Exner headed his own industrial design firm in Birmingham, Michigan, where he worked on a variety of automotive and nonautomotive projects until his death in 1973.

Exner's design for the 1947 Studebaker won-out over Loewy's design and this spelled the end of his career at Studebaker, even though he was retained to do the reworks for the 1948 and 1949 models.
Exner had a special arrangement with the Chrysler Corporation in that the Belmont would become his personal property after it was retired from the auto show circuit; this was indeed out of the ordinary, since retired concept and "dream" cars were routinely destroyed once their useful life was over.
Exner and his family retained ownership of the Belmont for several years and then sold the car to a Marie DeAngelo around 1968.

Exner was one of the pioneers in the industrial design profession.
To accomplish his goals on full size passenger cars, Exner thinned the body sections-especially those above the beltline-and attempted to expose certain areas of sheetmetal (the headlight surrounds on the '57 Plymouth are a good example) as delicate membranes.
Exner said that the Plymouth XNR stressed the real focus of an automobile as a driver's machine.

Exner is a story in and of himself, serving Loewy staff (1938-1946), Studebaker styling (1946- 1949), head of advanced styling at Chrysler (1949-1952), and finally director of styling at Chrysler (1953-1961).
Colbert and Keller called in Virgil Exner and his "Forward Look." Chrysler called it the "Hundred Million Dollar Look," and the result was a dramatic increase in sales with styling years ahead of the competition.
Since Exner was at Studebaker during an earlier design period, it appears to be possible that both the 55 Dodge and the 53 Studebaker grilles have a common lineage.

Exner was reportedly not only shocked but angry at having to virtually butcher the new designs to meet the new dimensional criteria, as well as having to eliminate the "fuselage" body design innovation, etc, in the interest of serious cost-cutting at an always-in-crisis Chrysler.
Exner, having to take the blame for it all, was drummed out of the corporation, with Elwood Engel coming from his recent triumph at Lincoln, with his Continental of '61, to rescue Chrysler's bacon from the fire.

I expect that the truth is that the '47 model was the child of both Loewy and Exner (and in any case, much of Exner's work on the postwar design would have been done while he was still in loewy's employ), although how much is attributable to whom is probably impossible to accurately evaluate.
