From 1998 onwards, locomotives began to be outshopped in the new Virgin Trans red and black livery.

Virgin Trains - Review - Virgin Cross Country
All in all, Virgin Cross Country is a good value service, that occasionally runs to time and offers a really good service.
Virgin claims that many of their punctuality problems are caused by the poor reliability of the old rolling stock (30-35 years old) that they inherited with the franchise, and that many of the problems will be solved with the new Voyager and Super Voyager units that they are now introducing.
I am deeply sceptical - I have used Virgin services countless times, and only once has a problem developed with the old rolling stock (the locomotive malfunctioned and had to be changed, which added about 15 minutes to the journey).

I have said that GNER is the main operator on the east coast main line, but I should also mention Virgin Cross Country, which provides daily services to the west country and the south coast.
Virgin west coast services were severely disrupted by problems associated with modernisation work at Willesden and in the Euston area.
Standards on the Virgin services have never been as good as those on GNER, nor is Virgin as good as GNER at looking after passengers when something goes wrong, and I have considerable experience of that.

 SEmG--Cross Country Services
Virgin Cross Country regularly use HST units for the Bournemouth-Scotland service which run on the Southern as far as Basingstoke where they continue via Reading, or class 47 hauled trains to and from Sussex.
Cross country services (in BR days Inter-Regional Trains) have a long history and some services can be traced back to examples such as the LandNWR "Sunny South Express" between Liverpool and Eastbourne, "The Pines Express" between Manchester and Bournemouth and the un-named 11 a.m.

From my own experiences part of the problem seems to be that these cross country services, and I don't just mean Virgin here, seem to just be an incredibly long stopping service.
On the plus side (for me) Virgin are just about the nicest guys to deal with, they bend over backwards to help and the PR department is one for Richard Branson to be proud of.
There are outside influences to consider, of course, the weather doesn't help for one, but railways have been around for a long, long time and to have brand new sets failing because of sea water soaking them in the Dawlish area is really not on.

Ananova - Virgin Cross Country stop services in North East
Some Cross Country Services are running every two hours between Scotland, Taunton and Southampton, although some services may still start from Birmingham New Street and end at Reading.
Virgin trains going to the North East are not running past Birmingham, except for occassional shuttle services between Edinburgh and Newcastle, due to extensive flooding in the region.
Virgin West Coast customers travelling north to destinations other than Manchester or Liverpool should change at Crewe for hourly trains calling at stations to Preston, Carlisle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Executive Committee - Virgin Cross Country Trains' Proposals (ED/00/136/HQ) - 9 May 2000
This report analyses the proposals from Virgin Trains for the 2003 Cross Country Timetable, and identifies areas of concern to bring to the attention of the Rail Regulator.
A joint Virgin/Railtrack team has been working for some time on a revised timetable for cross country services, to be introduced when all the new trains are in service, in 2003.
It is suggested that the Rail Regulator should require Railtrack and Cross Country Trains to resolve the outstanding difficulties in relation to this part of the network, so as to secure significant journey time improvements for the travelling public.
