On 22 December 2005 Virgin Nigeria made a new filing to the United States Department of Transportation for a foreign carrier permit, which points out that the degree of Virgin Atlantic ownership in Virgin Nigeria (49%) is not a barrier to granting such a permit.
Virgin Nigeria plans to add Newark as its first American destination, followed by Washington DC, (to cater for political and NGO traffic), and Houston (catering for oil industry-related traffic).

Nigeria’s flag carrier, Virgin Nigeria Airways yesterday performed the wing ceremony for seven pilots and 58 Cabin crew in Lagos, to shore up its number of employees.
Felix Ohiwerei, chairman of Virgin Nigeria disclosed during the ceremony, held at the Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja.
According to him, "a good number of Virgin Nigeria employees will be trained at NCAT and in no time a new generation of pilots, engineers and mechanics will be raised to take over from the experienced but ageing hands and bridge the generational gap in the industry".

Nigeria's new national carrier, part-owned by Richard Branson, will not be permitted to operate direct flights into the United States because of Britain's anti-competitive aviation policy, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Friday.
The new carrier, Virgin Nigeria, which is due to begin operations early next year, has drawn initial investment of USD$50 million, with Nigerian institutions taking 51 percent and Virgin Atlantic the remaining 49 percent.
A spokesman for Virgin Atlantic said that Virgin Nigeria had not yet formally applied to the US aviation authorities for clearance to schedule flights to the United States but the airline was confident it would get a permit.

The new company, Virgin Nigeria Airlines, is due to begin operations later this year and replaces Nigeria's former flagship carrier, state-owned Nigeria Airways, which was liquidated in 2003 with debts of USD$60 million.
