  Virgin Prunes :: U2 Connection
I also (less frequently) discover Virgin Prunes fans who aren’t aware of the group’s connection with what has become one of the largest rock bands on the planet.
The connections in human terms are that U2’s The Edge (David Evans) is the younger brother of the Virgin Prunes’ Dik (Richard Evans).
Since the Virgin Prunes disbanded in 1986, Gavin Friday and Bono have worked together on the soundtrack to the film In the Name of the Father.

 Virgin Prunes (The Grey Area)
The series saw Virgin Prunes tackle the tricky concept of the beauty that can be found in being different (in this case both physically an12d musically), an idea that had informed the initial formation of The Lypton Village.
Through their lengthy travels of Europe the group had been exposed to a whole new range of influences including the lush romanticism of the classic chanson singers, a style that Gavin Friday in particular was beginning to embrace as part of a wider exploration of torch songs.
Just as Virgin Prunes had incorporated their myriad musical influences into their individual sound, successive generations of musicians and artists have claimed Virgin Prunes as a huge influence on their own work.

RTÉ Business: NTL makes an improved bid for Virgin
Virgin Mobile has received an improved takeover proposal of 372p a share from UK cable company NTL after weeks of contentious negotiations, people closed to the deal said.
Virgin Mobile, majority owned by billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson, had previously rejected as insufficient an offer of 323p a share that valued the firm at about £817m.
The deal to acquire Virgin Mobile comes as NTL is closing its acquisition of smaller rival Telewest, which it bought for $6 billion last October.

Originally comprised of Friday, vocalists Guggi (born Derek Rowen) and Dave-id (David Watson), bassist Strongman (Trevor Rowen), drummer Pod (Anthony Murphy) and guitarist Dik (Richard Evans, the Edge\'s brother), the Virgin Prunes baffled audiences at their outrageous first concerts, which borrowed more from the approach of performance art than the traditions of rock music.
After the departure of Pod (replaced by Haa Lacka Binttii), the Virgin Prunes released A Different Kind of Beauty, a sprawling, ambitious project made up of four interlocking chapters, released separately on the seven-inch, ten-inch, 12-inch and cassette formats.
When the Virgin Prunes resurfaced with 1986\'s The Moon Looked Down and Laughed, their music had gone through another stylistic change into melodic, ballad-driven pop, signifying Friday\'s increased fascination with cabaret music.

Virgin Prunes - A New Form Of Beauty
It's hard to picture it now but the Virgin Prunes were once part of the same post-punk Dublin scene as U2.
Led by Gavin Friday, this provocative collective were renowned for their live appearances which were more concerned with art and performance (simulated sex, nudity, that kind of thing) than the music itself.
Moments of levity are rare, however, for this is a soundtrack to accompany a child's nightmares.

The VIRGIN PRUNES have been an absolute unique band in the early and mid 80s and influenced the whole Gothic-Rock genre as much as, for example, Christian Death did.
The B-Side shows also the humour of the VIRGIN PRUNES in the song "Down The Memory Lane", which is still a well-known band classic.
The studio songs has been re-released as bonus tracks on the "Over The Rainbow" CD, which is a compilation of various PRUNES sampler appearances.

The History of Rock Music. Virgin Prunes: biography, discography, reviews, links
British dark-punk was easily topped by the most eccentric of all "dark" bands, the Virgin Prunes (2), that came from Ireland with a completely different approach to "gothic", an approach that mixed archaic rituals with avantgarde music.

In L.A. speak, the Virgin Punes could be described as The Lords of The New Church meets The Fall, or Bauhaus with The Doors' personality and Siouxsie & The Banshees' beat.
The Virgin Prunes relied more on a Dadaist stage show and an Eno-on-angel dust approach to soundscapes than the old fl velvet and dry ice routines of most gothic horror shows.
The best ballpark comparison to the Prunes sound and "feel" would have to be Bauhaus, although that's just getting you into the ballpark, so don't make too much of it: the Prunes exist in their very own, very singular continuum.

Before coming to Touch and Go in 1986, the Virgin Prunes of Dublin, Ireland had been a majoratively quirky, gothic tinged performance art band.
Formed in 1977, and led by Gavin Friday, the Prunes had a largely cult following throughout their ten-year career.
The Prunes released their only full length for Touch and Go in 1986, a more melodic and ballad oriented work, entitled The Moon Looked Down and Laughed.

Emerging from Dublin's small late-'70s punk scene, the Prunes were part of a collective that included members of U2 (Prunes guitarist Dik Evans is The Edge's brother).
But while U2 wound up taking up the rock-as-revolution ethos of the times, Friday and the Prunes were much more enamored with the revolution-as-art ideas that came along with the genre's "anything goes, so fuck all of you" attitude.
But the Prunes' obsession with artful punk is most eloquently presented via A New Form of Beauty, which was originally released sequentially as a 7-inch, a 10-inch and a 12-inch in 1981 and a cassette in 1982.

For a time the Virgin Prunes were dubbed "the most overtly subversive rock group ever to come out of the genre".
The musical similarities between the bands are tenuous however, while U2 seemed to be pre-occupied with `Echo and the Bunnymen` records like `Crocodiles` and American college radio, The Virgin Prunes had a theatrical element which they married to their krautrock and post-punk influences.
Along with these members the band was made up by Guggi's brother Strongman on bass and several different drummers but by the time of Heresie they had settled with Mary d'Nellon.

Always more a performance based band, the Virgin Prunes left themselves open for ridicule and criticism from a particularly repressed and resistant Catholic Ireland.
A mixture of high art and high camp, grand master plan and simultaneous lack of agenda, the Virgin Prunes could not be pigeon-holed and thus could simultaneously alienate and intrigue an audience.
