The statue is kept in Suyapa, a suburb of the capital Tegucigalpa, and toured through various other parts of the country each year in early February.

Many a fervent catholic did their customary annual pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the Lady of Suyapa, located on the outskirts of Tegucigalpa.
The massive basilica of Suyapa welcomed visitors from around the country and was bustling with activity during the days just before and after the 3rd of February, date when the devotion to the virgin of Suyapa is celebrated.
Curiously, the impressive basilica is closed most of the year, as common belief is that the figure of the Virgin is more at home in the old sanctuary, located nearby in the original church built to house the image in the village of Suyapa.

The Embassy of Honduras in Sweden celebrated the Virgin Mary of Suyapa´s Day by giving a mass in her honour at the Catholic Cathedral of Stockholm on February 4th.
In 1925, His Holy Highness Pope Pius XII declared our Lady of Suyapa, Patron of the Republic of Honduras, and February 3rd was chosen as day of celebration with a national holiday and a massive pilgrimage to the Basilic of Suyapa in Tegucigalpa.
It was the first time that the Honduran community in Sweden had the opportunity to commemorate and venerate their patron "la Virgencita de Suyapa" in an offical ceremony, also attended by other Latin-Americans, local authorities and diplomatic representatives from countries such as El Salvador, Colombia, Nicaragua and Perú.

Every year the celebration begins the day before with a march from a predetermined place from where a special carriage for the virgin is paraded to the Basilica and is handed over to the parish priest and a mass is given.
That day we have several masses and we sing the hymn of the Suyapa Virgin.
This is also a long day, but you can get food and there are people selling beverages, crucifixes and pictures with the Suyapa Virgin’s image.
