Bottomley does not play the conventional politician's game and this is a contributory factor in her decision to stand down at the next election.
But Bottomley is honest enough to admit that while she is still full of energy - at 54 she is a perfect embodiment of the generation of youthful post-50-year-olds identified by the Social Issues Research Centre last week - she has lost her hunger for parliamentary politics.
Bottomley herself, once a researcher for the Child Poverty Action Group, is a former magistrate and chairman of the Lambeth juvenile court.

 Society | An odd couple
Mrs Bottomley, from grander metropolitan stock, was on the "wet" wing of the Tory party, an NHS enthusiast who had been sent by John Major to rescue it from the loonier privatisation fantasies of the free-market right.
Mrs Bottomley also had a problem with the trust chairmen, some of whose public policy suggestions, such as floating Guy's hospital trust on the stock market and sending mock "invoices" to patients who fail to turn up for appointments, were proving embarrassing to the post-Thatcher government.
Mrs Bottomley would later admit that Mr Hunt was "critically involved" in the implementation of the Tory internal market reforms, and that she felt "so comfortable" with him that at one stage she considered offering him a job as her political adviser.
