Common Ground - Conservation Partnerships - Fort A.P. Hill
Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia is one of the largest and most important military bases on the East Coast.
Fort A.P. Hill itself and large blocks of adjacent land are priority areas for the Conservancy, and the base abuts the acquisition boundary of the USFWS’s Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
The Fort A.P. Hill project is just one of many of these perhaps unlikely – but extraordinarily beneficial – new partnerships between and among nontraditional partners with seemingly unrelated missions and objectives, but who nonetheless unite and work together to achieve a common goal – the conservation of our natural heritage.

 Navy Hill, Richmond, Virginia
The Navy Hill section in the city of Richmond was located between 3rd and 10th Streets (within the boudaries of Jackson Ward) and ran just north of Leigh Street all the way to Shockoe Cemetery.
In this sense, the evolution of the Navy Hill region corresponds to Samuel Mordecai's explanation that there was a deep ravine dividing the areas north of Leigh from the rest of the city.
Still, the history of the Navy Hill School in the twentieth century was, unfortunately, one of gradual decline.

The railroad's terminus since 1875 had been the village of Round Hill, and its boarding houses, merchants and livery stables had profited from the summertime dollars of well-to-do Washingtonians and diplomats, many of whom spent their summers in Loudoun to escape the heat, humidity and threat of disease.
Some Round Hill residents recalled that another transportation improvement, the Snickers Gap Turnpike, had given their village its start--and had begun the demise of Woodgrove, 1 1/2 miles north of Round Hill, on the older main road west.
The June 1900 ordinances were enacted to ensure that Round Hill would not become another Woodgrove and began by prohibiting residents from removing "dirt, sand or rock" from town streets and alleys.
