West Virginia State University is a small historically fl public college in Institute, West Virginia, an unincorporated suburb of Charleston, West Virginia.
The school was established as the West Virginia Colored Institute in 1891 under the second Morrill Act which provided for land-grant institutions for fl students in the 17 states that had segregated schools.
State's athletic teams, known as the Yellow Jackets, compete in NCAA Division II as a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Following the American Civil War, William Mahone (1826-1895) of Petersburg, Virginia was the driving force in the linkage of Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad, Southside Railroad and the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad in 1870 to form the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad (AMandO), a new line extending from Norfolk to Bristol.
In 1882, the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute at Petersburg was forerunner of Virginia State College, which expanded to become Virginia State University.

Jean Cobbs' lawsuit claims that VSU administrators, in a long series of actions, have thwarted and compromised her teaching, her administration of the highly successful social work program that she established, and her very ability to function successfully and normally in a professional capacity.
Professor Cobbs' claim, after all, was that the school's discrimination against her was based on the fact that she was, in VSU's eyes, a fl citizen who did not submit to the political views that the university administration would impose as "correct." Judge Gill left the matter for a jury to decide.
