Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant institution and was named Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets is another tradition that distinguishes the university, which required corps participation for every able-bodied male for four years until 1923 and then for two years until 1964, when it became voluntary.
Virginia Tech remains one of three public universities in the country (Texas A&M and North Georgia College and State University are the others) with both an active corps of cadets and "civilian" lifestyle on its campus.

Virginia Tech gained international honors for building the fastest supercomputer at any academic institution in the world.
The Xserve-based supercomputer is part of Virginia Tech’s Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, where scientists tackle multi-disciplinary, “grand challenge” problems in science and engineering —; large-scale problems such as computational fluid dynamics, molecular modeling, nanoelectronics, quantum chemistry, computational biology and large-scale network emulation.

Virginia Tech broke ground August 2, 2005 for the Peggy Lee Hahn Pavilion in the Peggy Lee Hahn Horticulture Garden.
Hahn, above, after whom the Garden has been named, and T. Marshall Hahn, her husband and former Virginia Tech president from 1962 to 1974, were on hand at the ceremony that celebrated the building of a new 2,500-square-foot multi-purpose, special events, and educational center.
