The Cadet 1st Battalion was housed at Radford Army Arsenal for two years at "Rad-Tech." There in World War II Army barracks the cadets lived and took many of their classes.
In 1973 Virginia Tech was the first Corps of Cadets in the nation to enroll women, assigning them to L Squadron.
Virginia Tech is one of only two universities in the nation that maintains a full time corps of cadets within a large university.

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets hosted the first annual Senior Military College Basketball Invitational over the weekend, as 16 ROTC and corps teams from several universities across the eastern United States converged on Blacksburg to battle it out on the basketball court.
Virginia Tech's Gold and Silver teams both advanced past pool play, but their title hopes were derailed by injuries and absences.
Cadets march 13 miles in the fall and 13 miles in the spring, following the path that the first student and cadet, Addison Caldwell, took to enroll.

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets has been making efforts to recruit and keep students in the corps, with a goal of building its strength to 1,000 cadets by the year 2000.
Sixty-two percent of the incoming corps freshmen graduated in the top 20 percent of their high-school classes, and 46 percent were members of the National Honor Society.
This distinction is giving the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets an edge over other military colleges and programs, and, in some cases, over the military academies, according to some prospective cadets.

Remember, Virginia Tech is (obviously) mainly an engineering school, not a hotbed of liberal arts (that's what UVa is for).
Virginia Tech's corps of cadets are more or less respected by most (at least it seems so) and fit nicely into the campus without seeming to aggresively impact the political landscape of the school or town.
However Blacksburg and Virginia Tech remain fairly "white" places (minus the campus, the town is probably 95-99% white), but I don't think minorities would or should be particularly uncomfortable for any reason.
