Released at a time when the Sony Playstation was at its peak of popularity, Virtual Game Station was the first PlayStation emulator, for any platform, that enabled games to run at full speed on modest computer hardware, and the first that supported nearly all PlayStation games.
The Virtual Game Station (VGS) is an emulator by Connectix that allows Sony PlayStation games to be played on a computer.
Like the PS1, only games released for the selected VGS system could be run, copied games would not work either, although it didn't take too long for the hacker community to release a "Mod Chipped" version.

NOTE: Unknown to us at the time, a day after Connectix Virtual Game station was released, someone wrote a VGS patch that gets around Connectix protections that prevent the use of VGS to play illegal copies of Sony's games.
Connectix is now shipping a new emulator, Virtual Game Station ($49), which emulates the Sony PlayStation on Apple G3 Macs (older Macs with upgrade cards are not supported).
Demonstrations on the Expo show floor on the new 266 MHz iMacs ($1199) showed snappy performance of games, not as fast as on a Sony Game Station, but faster and smoother than on Virtual PC with Windows.

 Connectix's Virtual Game Station Review
I can't think up any reason to recommend Connectix's Virtual Game Station to the Mac gaming community as a whole.
Neither should you discount the fact that the "actual" game station will be able to utilize every Playstation controller including dual-shock controllers, light guns with recoil and pedal reload (don't hold your breath waiting for that to come to the Mac), and analog steering wheels.
The main feature that might interest you is that the PSX2 will be backwards compatible with Playstation games and controllers.

It's still in either alpha or beta (can't remember which), ao not as many games are supported, but it's OS X native.
