Topic: Virtual channel

Virtual channel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In telecommunications, a logical channel number (LCN), also known as virtual channel in North America, is a channel designation which differs from the actual radio channel or frequency on which the signal travels.
Channel 8 might use channel 32 for its ATSC or DVB transmission, but a virtual channel map or virtual channel table (VCT) allows viewers to tune to channel 8 on a digital set anyhow.
Virtual channels are also used on direct broadcast satellites, such as Dish Network, DirecTV, and Astra.

Virtual Channel Memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Virtual Channel Memory, or VCM, is a memory architecture which was originally developed by NEC.
VCM creates a state in which the various system processes can be assigned their own virtual channel, thus increasing the overall system efficiency by avoiding the need to have processes share buffer space.
This is accoplished by creating different "blocks" of memory and then allowing each individual memory block to interface separately with the memory controller and have its own buffer space.

The Virtual Channel Model for Personalized Television
The virtual channel is a model that aids the organization and dynamic presentation of television programming from a combination of live broadcasts, prerecorded content and Internet resources at each set-top box.
The virtual channel is a model that shows a clear path towards the design of future interactive television applications that in addition to informational overlays also feature local storage and networking —either within the home or with the Internet.
The underlying virtual channel control continues automatically to play the next music video clip, although the event may be handled programmatically to change the behavior of the virtual channel in order to display a user interface, an agent dialog, or to alter dynamically the virtual channel queue of upcoming content.

Virtual Channels/Paths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
A virtual channel is a unidirectional pipe made up from the concatanation of a sequence of connection elements.
The virtual channel and path numbers of a connection may differ from source to destination if the connection is switched at some point within the network.
Virtual channels which remain within the a single virtual path through out the connection will have identical virtual channels identifers at both ends.

As a result of the overwhelming interest in the Rottnest Channel Swim the Virtual Rottnest Channel Swim (Virtual Swim) was established to enable the wider community to participate.
The concept of the Virtual Swim is to provide a community event at local pools where participants can replicate the 20 kilometre crossing in teams of four, as duos, or for the extremely dedicated, a solo crossing.
Participants in the Virtual Swim were encouraged to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Rottnest Channel Swim Association donated $2 to the RFDS from every entry received.

 Channel
A Channel is a point of communication in a program, a mailbox to/from which data enters/leaves a program.
Channels are objects through which the objects in the current processes address space can interact with objects in another processes address space.
A channel in one process space is associated with a channel in the address space of another process space.

Definition: virtual channel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
virtual channel (VC): The communication channel associated with a virtual channel connection (VCC) that provides for the transport of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells among ATM active elements.
A VCC is an association established at the ATM Layer between two or more endpoints for the purpose of user-user, user-network, or network-network information transfer.
A VCL is a means of unidirectional transport of ATM cells between the points where a VCI value is assigned and the point where the value is translated or removed.

 VCI (Virtual Channel Identifier) Definition
Stands for "Virtual Channel Identifier." The VCI, used in conjunction with the VPI (virtual path indicator), indicates where an ATM cell is to travel over a network.
The VCI within each ATM cell defines the fixed channel on which the packet of information should be sent.
Since this numerical tag specifies the virtual channel that each packet belongs to, it prevents interference with other data being sent across the network.

 Publishing things
A virtual channel is the one that wishes to store its content in a place other than a BLOB of the MChannels database, or which requires a special processing of incoming data.
For example, a satellite imagery channel may be configured as a virtual channel at one site, and as a real channel at another.
A content pushed into a virtual channel does not have to be inserted into a MChannels database -- these data may as well be stored in a file on a target computer.
