Virtual databases rely on the configuration files of the underlying physical databases to determine if a search or display format request is possible for the given database.
Virtual databases may also include EXPLAIN information (as the example shows), but need not have DTDs, indexes, etc. specified (if these are specified, they are ignored).
For virtual databases to be used with webcheshire all of the FILEDEFs for the physical databases must be included in the file referenced but the "CHESHIRE_CONFIGFILE" variable.

Virtual Database Technology CodeFutures has a real bias for clever technologies (anybody interested in a cool DAO generator?).
CodeFutures has recently worked with virtual databases, which is a very clever technology.
The product is aimed at database administrators (there's an emphasis on usability and reproducing the look and feel of a traditional relational databae) and should not be too difficult for Java developers to master.

The Virtual Lawyer - Database Duplicity
Because a database is a "compilation" of preexisting materials or data, protection only runs to the way the data is selected, coordinated or arranged.
The European Union has been fumbling for a couple of years with database protection and even passed a "directive" on the subject that attempts to maintain a balance between a free flow of information and commercial protection of databases.
But wait, if the database maker changes the database in a "commercially significant" way, then he can claim that the twenty-five years runs from the date of the change.

Federated database system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A federated database (or virtual database) is the fully-integrated, logical composite of all constituent databases in a federated database system.
Through data abstraction, federated database systems can provide a uniform front-end user interface, enabling users and clients to store and retrieve data in multiple noncontiguous databases with a single query--even if the constituent databases are heterogeneous.
To this end, a federated database system must be able to deconstruct the query into subqueries for submission to the relevant constituent DBMS's, after which the system must composite the result sets of the subqueries.

OVERVIEW OF A DATABASE SYSTEM FOR MAGNET MEASUREMENTS
The database schema for this is comprised of specialized schema for different magnet measurements plus a set of general schema which services all the measurement hardware systems.
A database schema must declare the tables in which data is to be stored and specify the columns (attributes) which are to be described in that table, the relations between columns in that table and other tables in the schema, and permissions, indices, keys and related details of the table specification.
These are in the `tot' virtual database and the tables of interest include the dataowners table, the tables table and the columns table.

Virtual network file server - Patent 6356863   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The virtual file server essentially comprises a process by which the contents of a file from a remote file system can be generated and returned in response to a file system request.
Indeed, the server is free to internally represent the database in a very efficient compressed format, for example, removing duplicate sequences, Huffman or bit-wise encoding of residues, and representing sequences that are subsequences of another as a reference to the location within the parent.
However, the virtual network file server is also advantageously able to handle such file system "housekeeping" requests 260 by selectively choosing 290 and calling 300 a plug-in and thereafter encoding a reply 320 therefrom, thus freeing other plug-ins of the task of implementing trivial or common functionality.

 Primer: The Virtual Database
Like a database, only instead of being comprised of software that knows how to manage data plus a physical place to keep that data, a virtual database has only software.
One also might make the analogy that a virtual database is to a set of databases as a view is to a set of physical tables.
By contrast, a virtual database connects an application directly to the sources of data.

Geeking with Greg: MySQL Cluster and my big virtual database
MySQL Cluster is an in-memory database running across a cluster of machines that tries to be robust to failures of nodes.
Unsurprisingly, MySQL Cluster is not a giant, simple, virtual database that runs transparently over a cluster, nodes dropping in an out of service at will, with read-write replication and data migration all done automatically and robustly.
It may not be a big, virtual database, but it is a big step in the right direction.

Geeking with Greg: I want a big, virtual database
What I want is a robust, high performance virtual relational database that runs transparently over a cluster, nodes dropping in an out of service at will, read-write replication and data migration all done automatically.
I want to be able to install a database on a server cloud and use it like it was all running on one machine.
While not suited for Google-size databases, it does pretty transparently turn a rack of blades into a single database, with good scalability, reasonable performance, and fair reliability.

 Virtual Private Database
The database administrator must already have a good understanding of Oracle's Virtual Private Database features and principles before setting up the virtual private database for NDS Applications.

To implement the virtual private database for the fulfillment environment in NDS Applications, the Tenant ID is the element which identifies the master or client environment.

SERVICES - Virtual Machines, Virtual Private Servers
With a virtual server, you can easily isolate beta or early development code and not worry about needing to buy extra machines just for a safe testing environment.
With VM servers, it is easy to configure virtual database, web, and application processing servers all connected together on a private virtual network that only you control.
Of course, that means in your role as "virtual administrator" you must apply all the same service packs, fixes, and updates that you would use with a regular server and you must securely "lockdown" the server exactly the same way.

 About extending a virtual server
Before you extend the first virtual server on a server computer, you must create or connect to a configuration database; subsequent virtual servers do not have to be separately registered with the configuration database.
Generally, you extend a virtual server because you need to add more capacity to your server, whether that server is a departmental server or one of many in your server farm.
This means that if virtual server A contains the paths /teams, /sites, and /users, when you extend virtual server B and connect to the content database for virtual server A, virtual server B will also have the /teams, /sites, and /users paths.

I've been hearing about virtual appliances for quite some time now and their use has always held a particular fascination for me. However, it wasn't recently that I had the time to start using them in a serious way.
I envision using virtual appliances to reduce the complexity invovled in switching databases.
If I need to create a virtual network of four or five appliances to test clustering or failover, I want each appliances to be as slim as possible.

13 Using Virtual Private Database to Implement Application Security Policies
Virtual private database (VPD) enables you to enforce security, to a fine level of granularity, directly on tables, views, or synonyms.
The database user SYS is thus always exempt from VPD or Oracle Label Security enforcement, regardless of the export mode, application, or utility used to extract data from the database.
Although all database sessions and audit records are initiated as One Big Application User, each session can have attributes that vary, depending on who the real end user is. This model works best for applications that have a limited number of users and where sessions are not reused.

The seeMore Virtual Database Server allows the ability to perform heterogeneous joins when a query needs to pull data from multiple or heterogeneous sources and integrate it into a single view of information before passing it back to the end-user application.
