Virus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A capsid is composed of proteins encoded by the viral genome and its shape serves as the basis for morphological distinction.
In the case of the hepatitis B virus the T-number is 4, therefore 240 proteins assemble to form the capsid.
Virus self-assembly within host cells also has implications for the study of the origin of life, as it lends credence to the hypothesis that life could have started as self-assembling organic molecules.

Purdue researchers create device that detects mass of a single virus particle
When a virus particle weighing about one-trillionth as much as a grain of rice lands on the cantilever, it vibrates at a different frequency, which was measured by the Purdue researchers.
The virus particles we used in the study were vaccinia virus, which is a member of the Poxviridae family and forms the basis of the smallpox vaccine.
We have demonstrated the detection of a single vaccinia virus particle with an average mass of 9.5 fg.

 Panda Software - Virus Information
If you are using the encyclopedia but don't know the name of the virus you are looking for use key words such as: the name of the attached file, subject of the message that the virus came in or messages that appear on screen in the infected computer.
Paradoxically, each antivirus company names a virus according to its own criteria, making it possible for a single virus to have 10 or more names, creating confusion for users.
The "Statistics" section displays the development of infections caused by a virus, calculating the percentage of infected computers and the most infected countries.

Plant Viruses   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
To date, no plant virus is known to use a specific cellular receptor of the type that animal and bacterial viruses use to attach to cells.
Virus particles may contaminate soil for long periods and may be transmitted to the leaves of new host plants as wind-blown dust or as rain-splashed mud.
Subsequently, the virus may be distributed to all parts of the plant either by direct cell-to-cell spread or by the vascular system, resulting in a systemic infection involving the whole plant.

Virus Genomes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Both ends of (+)stranded eukaryotic virus genomes are often modified, the 5' end by a small, covalently attached protein or a methylated nucleotide 'cap' structure and the 3' end by polyadenylation.
Segmented virus genomes are those which are divided into two or more physically separate molecules of nucleic acid, all of which are then packaged into a single virus particle.
The expression of virus genetic information is dependent on the structure of the genome of the particular virus concerned, but in every case, the genome must be recognized and expressed using the mechanisms of the host cell.

Virus hoaxes are more than mere annoyances, as they may lead some users to routinely ignore all virus warning messages, leaving them vulnerable to a genuine, destructive virus.
Today 'virus' is a term well-known to every computer user, and many people who have never used a computer.
A virus may be programmed simply to display a humorous message on screen, or to erase all files on the computer, or to steal and distribute confidential data.

INDOlink - Science & Technology - Single Virus Detector Invented
As part of the grant, the researchers intended to demonstrate three things: that the sensors have the sensitivity needed to detect a single virus particle; that the sensors can detect the viruses selectively without becoming clogged with other particles; and that it’s possible to concentrate enough particles near the sensors to detect airborne viruses.
If they are awarded the three-year extension, they will attempt to construct devices that can look for different virus particles simultaneously, and they also may begin seeking additional funding for their project, he says.
The next step for the scientists will be to coat a cantilever with the antibodies for a specific virus, meaning only those virus particles would stick to the device.

 Macro Virus Identification Problems
This virus, written by a 14—year boy from Venezuela, spread like wildfire all over the world in a matter of weeks—and is still one of the most often reported viruses.
Once the virus body has been "canonized" this way, a checksum of it can be computed—and it will be always one and the same, regardless of how the virus changes its identifiers during replication.
Fortunately, since this is not done intentionally (obviously, the virus author has simply failed to foresee this side effect of the infection strategy he has chosen for his virus), when it happens the existing macro is simply damaged and the virus fails to work correctly.

 DR1 Forums - View Single Post - *** VIRUS WARNING ***
If the virus has already been activated by attempting to access the attachment, then it will have created a minimum of 3000+ items on your hard drive.
Note: if you have the virus on your computer don't leave it running as the virus will probably continue to replicate itself and can overload (and thus crash) your hard drive.
Don't open your mail program at all [or you'll be sending out the virus to all your contacts], don't open your browser on line as you may be giving open access to your system, and don't use IRC (Internet Relay Chat) or you risk sending it to everyone else on IRC.

Virus Activation Routines   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
A virus like One_Half also demonstrates the importance of knowing what a virus does before starting to disinfect it: One_Half is a full stealth virus, which gradually encrypts the contents of the hard drive.
If One_Half is removed by overwriting the virus code in the boot sector with a clean one, the components required to decrypt the drive are lost, and the encryption will not be hidden anymore by the stealth routines of the virus.
Virus analysis systems are automated as much as possible, and a virus typically only gets a cursory look - which is usually enough to add detection, identification and disinfection.

HIV Infection and AIDS - Definition, Description, Prognosis, Prevention, Parental concerns
The method by which he became infected is not known; however, genetic analysis of his blood sample suggested that HIV-1 might have stemmed from a single virus in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
The virus that causes AIDS was discovered in 1983 and named human T-cell lymphotropic virus-type III/lymphadenopathyassociated virus (HTLV-III/LAV) by an international scientific committee who later changed it to HIV.
Parental concerns are reflected in the status of a reproductive couple to prevent the transmission of the virus before pregnancy and if this is not possible, to obtain adequate prenatal care to prevent the transmission to the baby.
