Cakra, weapon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Of the weapons of attack mentioned in the ancient literatures of India the cakra, quoit, or discus, appears to be an implement peculiar to the Indian warrior's armoury, for it is hardly found in other cultures.
It is, however, difficult to visualize an implement of the shape of a tire being used as a weapon, since in several contexts pavi is compared to a sharp blade, as of an axe, falling on the victim and chopping his trunk or limbs.
On the other hand if the weapon is understood as some form of quoit which in the poet's imagination had sometimes been associated with the tire, on account of its circular metallic nature, the sense of several contexts seem to improve.

 NPT Documents
The proliferation of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction was one of the main factors likely to increase security fears, and it was imperative to put a stop to it.
However, the truth was that a delay of a quarter of a century could hardly be considered the "early date" stipulated in the Treaty for the conclusion of a comprehensive test-ban treaty and the cessation of the nuclear-arms race.
As was clear from article IV of the Treaty, the renunciation of acquisition or possession of nuclear weapons and the technology to develop such weapons by the non-nuclear-weapon States was not a renunciation of access to nuclear technology for purposes other than military.

 NPT PrepCom 1997: Malaysia's Statement
While nuclear weapon free zones are important as a means to check nuclear proliferation, they cannot substitute for the primary goal that is, the global elimination of nuclear weapons.
In this regard, my delegation wishes to underscore she special role of the nuclear weapon states vis-a-vis the NPT as the fulfillment of their part of the "bargain" would be a critical factor in bringing about the universality of the Treaty.
The adoption of Resolution A51/45M by a large majority of non-nuclear weapon states was testimony to the serious concern, indeed frustration, of the international community over the lack of genuine seriousness and the extremely slow pace in negotiations on nuclear disarmament leading to the ultimate elimination of nuclear weapons.

From the perspective of the Russian military, reliance on nuclear weapons was a logical response to the glaring inadequacy of conventional forces premised on the idea that nuclear weapons had greater utility than simply to deter a large-scale nuclear attack.
Official documents suggest, however, that reliance on nuclear weapons is seen as a temporary "fix" intended to provide for security until conventional forces are sufficiently modernized and strengthened.

The interim control, protection and accounting of nuclear weapons and fissile material holdings, she said, meant that even before such a convention was negotiated or came into effect, it might be useful to look at how to deal with the nuclear weapons themselves and the fissile material.
The follow-up to the book was contained in the periodic publication, Nuclear Weapons Convention Monitor, which included opinions and analyses from experts in the field and issues that related to large-scale, verifiable nuclear disarmament and a nuclear weapons convention.

 Arms Control Association:
What is particularly amazing about the U.S.-India deal is that it not only recognizes and legitimizes India's nuclear weapons, it actually requires less of the Indians than what the 5 recognized nuclear weapon states have already committed to do in furtherance of their obligations under Article VI of the Treaty.
Moreover, although the U.S. has backtracked from its agreement with the other weapon states at the 2000 NPT Review Conference to follow the "13 practical steps" to fulfill their obligation to pursue systematic and progressive efforts to implement Article VI, the basic requirement of pursuing good faith efforts toward nuclear disarmament is still extant.
The fight over the inclusion of Article VI at the time of the negotiations of the NPT suggests that this will be a continual irritant every time the NPT Review Conference convenes, with unpredictable consequences for nonproliferation in the future.

 Weapons in ancient Egypt
The principal weapon of the Egyptian army was the bow and arrow.
It was transformed into a formidable weapon with the introduction by the Hyksos of the composite bow made of horn, sinews and wood, combined with body armour - which was often little more than broad leather straps - and the war chariot, enabling fast attacks at long range [1].
After the bowmen, either on foot or on chariots, had softened up the enemy forces with a shower of arrows [4], the infantry would rush in, breaking their ranks with hand weapons, maces with wooden handles and stone - later metal - heads, battle axes, hatchets, clubs, swords, scimitars and daggers.

 Precision Guided Munitions
Introduction Undoubtedly, one of the most important developments in the history of twentieth century warfare has been the emergence of the precision weapon: the weapon which can be aimed and directed against a single target, relying on external guidance or its own guidance system.
In fact, the modern precision weapon era may be said to have begun on 13 May 1972, when four flights of laser-guided- bomb-armed McDonnell F-4 Phantoms perfunctorily took down the Thanh Hoa bridge in North Vietnam, a notorious graveyard for dozens of strike aircraft and airmen for the previous seven years.
Though precision weapons deployed from aircraft, helicopters, battlefield missile systems, and ships and submarines off-shore undoubtedly offer a degree of leverage in warfare previously unknown, their cost is a serious concern, and one that must be addressed.
