In its resolution 1982/31 it decided for the first time to request its Chairman to appoint a Special Rapporteur of the Commission whose mandate would be to make a detailed study of the human rights situation in Guatemala.
In its resolution 1986/62, the Commission requested the appointment of a special representative whose mandate would be to receive and evaluate the information received from the Government about the implementation of the new legislation intended to protect human rights.
Viscount Colville of Culross was reappointed in that capacity, and in 1987, the mandate of the Special Representative was terminated.
